AVG loves my CPU too much

I am falling out of love with AVG's free anti virus software.

v8 has not gone down well in my house. First, the link scanner would slow down all the Google searches (and other search sites too, I'm sure). Sandi found that if she clicked on a search too quickly (an important part of her job) then Firefox would crash. Then I read that the link scanner was upsetting website owners for generating extra traffic without bringing extra users.

Now I'm experiencing heavy CPU from the "resident shield" on a laptop, which isn't helpful as it drains the battery and delays program launching and window opening by tens of seconds. avgsrx.exe was pretty much using 99% of the idle time of the CPU. I'm not sure when it started behaving badly, but even after leaving it running all night there was no end in sight.

Uninstall and re-install with the latest version didn't help so I have kicked AVG into touch and I am installing Avast! (the new popular kid on the block) instead.

avg, avast, windows
