Sandi won the DVD of
El Laberinto del fauno, a bottle of nice Rioja wine and a bag of mild cheese popcorn, and they finally arrived last week! Last night we drank the wine with our steak, watched the DVD between Doctor Who and Pushing Daisies, and ate the popcorn during the film. The popcorn was a bit odd, and the film was excellent.
Pan's Labyrinth is a movie about a girl moving from the city to the countryside during the early part of General Franco's rule in 1944. As her brutal new step-dad continues to crush, literally, the anti-Franco rebellion, the girl discovers Pan in a grotto under a maze. Pan offers her a way out of the nightmare above to re-join the magical kingdom below.
The special effects are very special (the film won 3 Oscars for best art direction, cinematography and make up) especially the mixing of the fantasy elements into reality. Hats off to
Doug Jones for the complex costumes and make up he endured, and being the only person in the film who couldn't speak Spanish.
