The Price of Prince

Jul 15, 2007 12:02

Forgive me, fellow Guardian readers, for I have sinned. I bought the Mail on Sunday today. And the Observer, but it only features some lame booklet on 'Scandal' rather than Prince's latest album Planet Earth.

The music is OK - I'm not keen on tracks 1 and 3, but the rest of the disc is sounding good so far. He is a brave man short cutting the traditional record labels - they're already in a flap about Internet distribution and claim covermounts cheapen the value of the music. Playing 21 gigs in the old Millennium Dome next month doesn't sound cheap to me. Perhaps the £31.21 ticket price was too low when other big singers are charging £100-£500 (Barbera Streisand!)

Unfortunately the changes in the music industry have squeezed quite a few independent record shops out of business. Do any Cambridge locals have recommendations to replace my Fopp affections?

Reading the letters page of the Mail on Sunday shows why I don't want to be counted amongst their usual readership - one reader said the drop in fishing and fishes over 20 years at his childhood holiday fishing village highlighted the threat of global warming. Eh? I thought it was the pollution, the over fishing, and the EU fishing quotas which were killing off the traditional fisherman's way of life.
