Laptops are good, but I need to fiddle with plugs and wires so my wireless ADSL router can draw from the oasis of electrons during those moments of madness when all the lights go out.

I suspected some people might be harbouring lead acid foot rests, door props and dust collectors. My last company certain did, so I thought I'd gauge the state of play at home.

I've just moved back to the UK, so in theory should be OK.

I was living out in Brazil where a surge protector is a given, and I was using a UPS as well.

We got a UPS when we still lived in Ely since the power supply was really quite unrealiable. And it's not very nice for the poor PCs :) It's still useful since the power supply is better but we still get cuts, so it's a very useful thing to have.
