The thing that makes me sad about Apple TV is this probably means that Apple will definitely not ever work with TiVo to allow their formats to be played on TiVos. For instance any video or music on my computer that I don't buy from iTunes plays on my TiVo. Also TiVo makes software to download shows it records onto PCs... but again, not Macs.
