He was tired. Not surprising really, stopping Nero had been both physically and mentally exhausting. Doctor McCoy had ordered all senior staff off the bridge for the next eight hours with the added instruction that they were to rest. At the time he had thought that was an unnecessary instruction but when the young acting Captain Kirk woke up from a dose in the command chair to argue with him, Spock realized that the Doctor knew very well what he was doing. Arguing hadn’t helped of course and now he was walking down a quiet corridor where the Vulcan elders were currently quartered.
He touched the commplate to request entrance and it opened immediately. Stepping inside he noticed the lights were out and the only light was coming from the starlight outside the view port. His father was kneeling beside the port, his face turned toward the distant lights, his eyes closed and face calm. Spock kneeled next to him and Sarek opened him eyes. He lifted his hand, beckoning Spock nearer and as he complied his father’s fingers rested against his temple. Spock’s breath caught as their minds moved together and Sarek’s thoughts and grief flowed toward him.
You are so much like her…I was so proud when you declined appointment to the Vulcan Science Academy …yes, I understood that it was a slur against her…you are the best part of both of us and she loved you very much…
and so do I….
