No Brand Con

Apr 17, 2005 16:33

YAY, I ended up getting to go.

The job situation first for those of you who care to know. So I went to the interview on Friday. RIGHT. They dumbasses lost my resumé and application, then the guy who was GOING to talk to me at 3:30 wasn't even there so I had to chatter with some manager dude who didn't even know who the fuck I was, much less that I was coming in. WELL. So that guy set me up for a 9:00pm Interview tomorrow WITH Rich who is the guy who made the Friday appointment for me in the farking first place. God. Lmao so with any luck HE'll want to hire me, then HE'LL set me up with an appointment with the General Manager ... and from there, I may become a hostess at Ruby Tuesdays. 9.00/hr isn't a bad job, and I'll probably be ablet o get around 20-35 hours a week (part-time, not what I was TOTALLY going for but it's a job and far be it from me to complain. That's money per two weeks that I need and want.).. which isn't too bad.

So there's the job prospect. I'll be really hapy if I get it. I just have to tell him that there are really just two weekends I won't be able to work, and then one full week later in August that I'll want to use to visit family (and go to Otakon!) ... and that will be teh happy. It shouldn't be a problem. They have a semi-big enough staff that in all liklihood, they'll be really accomodating, since my otherwise availability is pretty damned "I'll be your bitch." That'll be nice.

ANIME BOSTON -- 11 Days and COUNTING.

You guys can't even KNOW how much I'm looking forward to Anime Boston right now. It's going to be an absolute SCREAM. ESPECIALLY because it happens to be the weekend RIGHT. AFTER. all the term papers and shit I have to get done, are done. So what a PERFECT breather it'll be. That and I get to see Kahri, which I'm looking forward to more than anyone could possibly imagine but me. ^.^

Okay so No Brand Con was this weekend. Hard to believe that con's been going on for four years. It really was run like a first year convention. I was totally underimpressed and will NOT be going back next year. The Guest Liaisons were the absolute pits.

I went down to No Brand Con with my good friend, Christina, who was really really nice about making sure that I was comfortable with my interview having been done and my job situation all squared away before we headed down. It was about an hour and a half drive. Not a big deal really if you ask me. 1.5 hours.. when I've driven 27 before? Psh. I felt no pain. Anywho. A word to the wise to anyone who is either currently guest Liaison in a convention or is like, Head Liaison. Those guests aren't going to tell you that they can't stand what you're doing with them if you ARE actually getting your job done but they don't like some nuances anyway. Greg and Monica were way nice.. I wouldn't have been were I the guest. Well not to say that I'd yell. I mean, I'd just have said maybe something because yeah. They were smothered by their liaisons. Not like fan-glomping smothered.

No matter what their personal plans were for that day at the convention, they'd be swept out of the building to go to this or that with the liaisons who were trying to make sure they were comfortable and fed. In hanging with the guests at a couple conventions, I've come to the conclusion that guests like to, at the core of it all, aside from having the assistance to make sure they're at their panels and everything gets taken care of on an official level, be actual con goers. I mean, they're there to have fun, not get jerked all over the place as if fans are really a detriment to their weekend. Christina and I didn't get to spend the time we wanted to with Monica and Greg for example, because the liaisons just seemed to always drag them away. I think Greg mentioned not being super happy about being unable to make the events he had planned.

We ran into some REALLY good friends of Greg's... Nick and his fiancé, Amy. Nick was cosplaying a 'surprise' for Greg that the guy was stoked about when NBC came to be this weekend. He was cosplaying as one of his characters.. I think it was E-sey? Something I haven't watched and therefore have no business trying to pronounce, really. ANYWAY. He was going to go watch Nick be cosplaying that in the masquerade (... and unfortunately, it was right around lunch time on that day) ... and he knew that Nick was going to be performing first becaues Amy and Nick made sure to let Greg know what was up. But he ended up missing it because he was dragged away. I think he was really bummed out about it because it meant a lot to Nick and Amy that he see the little thing and Greg really wanted to make it but ended up not being able to. So that wasn't so great.. and that was a Guest Liaison thing. He was a little irritated that he kept being dragged away, and even mentioned that at one point, "You know, we've been to this convention for two days (this was Saturday night/Sunday morning) .. and we haven't been at the "convention" yet, so we're really just happy to be chilling right here, hangin' out."

I did get to make good on my promise though to let Kahri chatter with Greg on the phone. He's going to Anime Boston and seems to be totally stoked about the Bad Luck concert. He's stoked about a lot of things at Anime Boston. If he does have any little nervousness though, I think it's pretty clear. He's got a friend who's coming up and he knows Anime Boston is going to be one of those bigger cons where if he's in the hallways, people are going to notice him and want to talk a lot and his friend isn't very confrontational, so he's a bit concerned that his friend is going to get pushed away and won't be really willing to just shove back and stuff. But really, he's totally excited about being there. He's loving on all the guests and all his panels and he's just overall super happy about it. He was only too happy to talk to Kahri on the phone. She asked me to tell him thanks for her (twice really. xD) and when I did he flippantly waved his hands and was all, "Psh.. I'm gonna see her at Anime Boston anyway, no thanks, she sounds cool."

Then again, everyone I was with thinks Kahri sounds awesome. This is probably mostly to blame because of my own lack of capability to SHUT UP ABOUT HER. I just blah blah'ed on and on and on. Nick and Amy want to meet her so bad I think Amy almost peed herself at the possibility of my snatching her up here for Sogencon, which is coming up on I believe, the weekend of the 22nd of May. Yes that's it.

Christina and I had a blast after meeting Nick and Amy. For a while there it was looking like we might just not even want to stick around for more than Friday. our hotel room door was FUBAR.. and the Liaisons were making it hard for us to be in any sort of contact with the guests that Christina really really wanted to hang with (she's their friend but.. eeeh they were kept perpetually busy and out and about) ... and I was hoping to get to know them a little better as well as a result of the atmosphere. But Nick and Amy were WAY AWESOME. They have the most adorable border collies. seriously. Adorable dogs.

Amy was cosplaying as Shuichi (in the leopard pants!) and... I mentioned earlier my feeble attempt at naming the anime that Nick was cosplaying (the character name escapes me because I'm on 6.5 hours of sleep and rapidly my brain is deteriorating to MUSH)... and yeah. so that was that. And we hung out, and they pretty much saved the con for the both of us. It was a blaaast and a half.

I picked up some Amaretto. I've been craving that shit. AND CRAP. I just realized Imma need to run out and pick up coke anyway. -snort- Bleargh.

One of the best drinks ever though. Amaretto and Coke. S'like drinking candy. Oh then there's Smirnoff Ice and Mother's Raspberry Schnapp's. THAT is like... ngh. A shirley temple with booze in it. (Smirnoff vodka... schnapps with less proof, it's booze mixed with booze so .. yeah. XD Not something I'd recommend drinking in great volume unless you WANT to get plastered. But it makes a great sipper!)

Let's see.

Oh yeah!

Sogencon, as I mentioned earlier.. is a con coming up in May. Greg, Monica. Johnny Bosch, erm.. people people more people, Travis Willingham and MORE people are going to be there. Apparently they were really looking for Guest Liaisons.

... so guess who's a Liaison for Sogencon.

That's right, baby. WOOT.

OH. The story about Travis and his little issue with the "orange badges" or "Chan-badges" at Anime Detour has reached everyone in the upper Midwest.

He's going to be dealing with shit for days. And they know who rescued him from that little fiasco, too.

For those of you who don't know, it was yours truly.

They recognized me when I was pre-registering... and.. yeah. So they were all ".... you should be Travis' personal Liaison, we'll make your staff badge ORANGE."

I couldn't say no.

This would be AWESOME. ESPECIALLY if I can find a way to drag my dearest Kahri up for the week that INCLUDES that convention. I would just ADORE it. because you see, Christina is going to be Monica's personal liaison... and Christina and I hang out often.. and Monica and Greg are best friends and Travis loves hanging with Monica and Greg.

Do you see where I'm going with this, Kahri, especially? Stick with me, hang with the guests. it's an easy .. easy way to just gab and have a GREAT time. I think over half of the reason I said I'd do it (I'm a bit nervous about doing Liaison for the first time. I mean it's one thing to hang with them, quite another to be responsible for getting them to their panels, waking them up in the morning, making sure they get to their rooms and making sure they get fed and shiyat)... is because even if Kahri isn't there... it's a way for me to be hanging with the few people that I'll really kind of know and care about (Christina, and Nick and Amy are BOTH gonna be there again so .. that's who I want to be seeing, as well as getting my chance to finally have a little personal time to really get to know the guests, for which I have good reasons beyond wanting to befriend them, they're in the industry I'm going into.. and therefore, they are privy to information that I could really, really use) ... but I mean. I really want Kahri to be there. More than half the reason I said yes to that is because ... Not only then can I give Kahri the gift of an AWESOME hang out with Christina, myself, Nick and Amy (who all three, really think she sounds awesome and are dying to meet her) ... but I can give her the gift of letting her get up close and personal with the guests that she likes. I mean, it's like whole 'nother ANIMAL, a convention, when you get to see it with the guests and hang out after hours with all these people who are just IN THE BIZ. It's really cool and ... it's like a great compliment to everything I, as a six year con-veteran, enjoy anymore about GOING to cons of any sort.

So I'm hoping she can come. I'm hoping it. I'd make it worth her while. I promise! Haha. I really really would , it'd be a GREAT time.. we'd have a BLAST, and it will only be HALF the blast it COULD have been, if she's not there.

Still fun, yes of course.

But... not as fun as I would have LOOOOOVED it to be.

RIGHT. And further to that, Nick and Amy really are all over the Gravi cosplaying which makes me SCREAM all over in my happy places. Haha. They're really enthusiastic cosplayers and those are the best kind. Yaoi fans too of course (obviously) as you can well imagine and that's TEH cool. SO. Yar. They wanna see KK as Shuichi, me as Ryuichi..

And they fully plan on dressing as RAGE!!!! (aaaahahahahahahaha) and Tetsuha!

For the soul purpose of interacting with us like CRAZY. It will be such a good time.

Okay I think that's about all that I can really enter at the moment with my brain rapidly deteriorating the way it is as per the moment. Love to all of you. Probably gonna talk to SOME peeps a little latah! Muah!

Spongeth of monkey-eth.
