J2 married, want to adopt a child, agency requires they practice with fake baby--FOUND!
SPN ends and J2 are married, looking at scripts, and Jared wants to adopt a child. He talks Jensen into investigating the process, and they apply at an agency. After they pass the initial screening, agency policy is a required period of weeks with a "baby" equipped with sensors and data recorders, that mimics various baby behaviors. They're not allowed to leave the baby unattended--"abandonment" will be recorded and is automatic rejection for their application. They have to attend classes with other applicants and their "babies" and report and discuss their progress with their "babies."
They get their "fake baby" and start learning how unrelenting childcare really is. Jensen isn't happy, but when Jared starts slacking off, he picks up the slack. Then Jared gets a great movie offer--filming in Europe with Vin Diesel. He really wants to do it, but he has to leave immediately, and it would mean leaving Jensen with sole responsibility for the "baby." Jensen acknowledges the irony of it being Jared who wanted this, but he can't deny it's a fantastic career opportunity, so he sends Jared off to do his movie.
He starts seeing pictures of Jared with Vin's crew out after filming, at clubs and having a great time. Jared texts and calls, excited about the work and also about how much fun he's having hanging out with Vin's boys when they're off set. The filming gets extended, and then there's some hitch and a reason for a filming hiatus, and Jared goes off for a skiing weekend or something with the boys and Vin...
And Jensen's home, minding the fake baby, going to classes on his own. They decided to release the news they're adopting (this is older, because this was more unusual than presently when it was written), and agreed to appear on a talk show. Jared promises he'll be home in time to do the interview, but of course his schedule gets wacked and he doesn't.
So Jensen goes on by himself, wearing the "baby" in a front papoose pack, and talks about how the experience has opened his eyes--not only about unremitting child care, but how surprised he is at how he seems to have bonded with the "baby." He sidesteps any discussion or questions about how involved Jared has been with the process. As the classes come to a conclusion, Jared has missed a few and the supervisors are about to disqualify them for Jared's lack of commitment. But at the last class, Jared walks in without having told Jensen he was coming, straight off the plane, and does a charming, sincere tribute to how parenting will work between them. They get approved.
