There's gekizetsu's classic The Last Outpost of All That Is. There's a coda for it as well, maygra's Not For Samson in the Temple

Culling my entire stash this week, so of course I saved both of those. And thanks for the list! As fast as I discard some, I'm adding new ones - once I'm gone, they'll have to throw all my fics into the fire after me!

Still looking for one that has eluded me for more than a year - one where the Apocalypse has happened (Sam said Yes in Detroit). Dean survived - seems like he might be running a bar afterwards, which makes sense, yes? A boy shows up with an old photograph of him and Sam, taken before he said Yes. I've never located it.

Dictionary for a Dead Language by britomart-is. The scene with the photo is in the epilogue.

Got that one, but that's not it. (Every time I ask this question, everyone recs the Dictionary fic. Every time I see it in my stash, I open it again, just to see if maybe it has changed, but - no.)

The fic I'm still searching for started with a series of interviews - like, a journalist interviewing people for an article - about Sam. And there's that damn photograph that sticks in my head. The one I'm thinking of is of the boy and Sam, not Sam and Dean. No, in the one I'm after, Sam isn't mentally damaged. He's not even physically in the fic until later.

Are there any pairings in this one?

*rolls up sleeves for the challenge*

LOL! I'm pretty sure it was Sam/Dean by the end.

I think the link you gave me must be it. Don't waste your time looking for the chimaera. Not sure why the Epilogue doesn't appear on the AO3 version.

I am still looking for another fic - also post-apocalyptic - told from a 3rd-person POV, where Sam and Dean are sort of legendary, appearing when people need them and then disappearing again. Seems like the 3rd person is sitting at a campfire one night when Sam appears out of the darkness, joins them for a while, and then leaves. I don't think they realize it's Sam at first.

I don't suppose that one is lyra_wing's legendary Dust in the Wind?

Is it possible that there are two versions of the Dictionary fic? The LJ link you gave me has a Prologue, three chapters, and an Epilogue. On AO3, the fic has 7 chapters and is missing the epilogue.

?? Gonna have to re-read these two tonight and see what's what.

I know this one, I read it not long ago. It's not tryfanstone's Not, it's sort of the reverse of that. I'll keep looking and post it if I find it.

Phoenix1966 gave me the link to Dictionary for a Dead Language, the one britomart_is posted on her LJ. Turns out that's the one - the version I've had for years from AO3 is missing the epilogue. So now I'm sraightened out. Thanks.

Oh wow, I just followed that link to the original post of Dictionary. There are 398 comments on that fic, *nine pages* of comments, plus 61 comments on the art post (which is freaking amazing!) alone.

Shows you how fic culture has changed in eight years, huh?

I just came across someone's tumblr post basically saying how they despise when an author has "Pls Comment!" on a story, how it's work for a reader to leave a comment and a reader leaving a comment is the same gift as an author posting a story.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around that one.

I read old stories on LJ sometimes, just to marvel at the amount of comments writers once used to get.

We need rocking chairs on a front porch somewhere!

And you remind me, one of my very favorite post-Apocalypse fics is your own Come the Night series, featuring boyKing!Sam and Dean with amnesia. Re-read it (again) just the other day!

ha! I was going to self-rec that story and then was too shy to! *Thank* you so much! Ah, those were the days, when the stories flowed like wine! (or in my case, a bottomless pot of coffee! ) :D
