Ask the Artist - lamapan
First I'd like thank oxoniensis for inviting me to do this month's ask the artist. I'm very honored, a little nervous
Hello, I'm Anna, or lamapan here at lj. I live in a pretty dull town in Sweden where I work at a minor advertisement company, and in my free time I like drawing Supernatural fanart. I got into fandom at the time of the spn-j2-bigbang last year, which was also the first challenge I participated in. At the time I hadn't been drawing anything for a few years, so I was rusty to say the least. Despite that, it ended up being an incredibly enjoyable experience.
I've always loved to draw, but started doing it more regularly in high school, and later studied for a while at a preparatory art school. In the end I didn't have the confidence to try to pursue illustration professionally, and then I kind of lost my motivation for drawing too. So I'm really happy I eventually found my way into fandom; the creative atmosphere here is inspiring and has helped me grow as an artist and rekindle my love for drawing.
I probably enjoy doing backgrounds and settings the most. I love illustrating stories, envisioning the world that an author created and translating my version into a drawing. I like being allowed to borrow bits of other people's ideas and maybe add something of my own, plus collaborations are just really fun and motivating. Drawing fanart for a show with live actors has also forced me to try challenging things like getting a good likeness in portraits and drawing more realistic figures.
Stylewise I work both traditionally (watercolors and gouache mostly) and digitally. My process usually goes something like this.
1, Search for inspiration/ reference and rough sketching, 2, Composition thumbnail 3, Drawing 4, Color sketch 5, Painting 6, Final edits (which as you see can be a lot).
