Hi, there! I'm Becka, and the lovely and talented
lazy_daze asked me to be your Ask the Author for this month.
I've been writing fanfic since before I could write (Star Trek: TNG killed off my favorite character, Tasha Yar, when I was four; I needed a fix-it), but until I fell headfirst into Harry Potter fandom in 2004 I'd never really been in a fandom, per se. I shipped Remus/Sirius hard, and I wrote a bunch of fic, and I made friends with people on the internet who loved the things I loved as much as I did. Amazing! I hung out in HP fandom for years almost exclusively. And then a real life friend of mine who was also fannish told me I should watch Supernatural, and we marathoned all of season one right before season two started airing (I'm so glad I didn't have to wait through that hiatus, y'all). I was still writing mostly HP then, but I started to dabble, writing little gen and het pre-series stories.
I didn't ship Wincest in the beginning, and I remember having a conversation with someone back then about how pointless I thought RPF AUs were, because why wouldn't you just write original fic?? Well, guess what…
Okay, except the first one.
Five Things That Never Happened to the Impala. (gen, G) Five ways that the Impala might have lost her Dean. One of the earliest things I wrote in SPN, and I think it's aged better than some of the rest.
There is a crack in everything (that's how the light gets in) (Sam/Dean, Sam/Dean/Jess, R) AU. Dean comes to stay with Sam at Stanford after he's seriously injured on a hunt. While Dean regroups, Sam has to deal with his not-so-simple feelings for his brother, and for the girl in his class who smiles at him a lot and drops books on his feet. I like my Wincest a little bit angsty and pretty inevitable and nearly impossible to explain to outsiders. I also love Jess. So this is both those things.
Dirt On Our Uniforms (AU, J2, NC-17) Jensen and Jared in boarding school. This was my first
spn_j2_bigbang fic, and some of the first RPF I ever posted, and I really didn't know anyone in the fandom, and it was TERRIFYING. And the response to it completely blew me away.
The One with the Pandas in It (AU, J2, NC-17) Jensen drives a city bus, and watches the local zoo's Panda Cam online in his free time. That's how he sees Jared, a zookeeper who always has a smile ready for pandas and zoo guests alike. And then one day, Jared starts riding Jensen's bus… Because I love pandas and public transit.
Too Loose to Fake (non-AU, Jared/Jensen/Danneel[/Sandy], NC-17) Jensen goes to California to make a movie, courts a girl, and has to figure out how to tell her about the two other people he's (sort of) in a relationship with. And then he has to decide what to do next, which may be the hardest part. Written for
polybigbang. Because I love negotiation and complicated relationship dynamics and Danneel. I love Danneel really a lot.
If you had known how that would sound to me (you would have taken it back) (AU, J2, PG) Jared and Jensen run a website about comic books. When they drive from Dallas to Washington, DC to attend the Small Press Expo, the trip doesn't go quite as Jared expected. Because I love indie comic books and the rough but not impassable places in relationships.
Anywhere and Everywhere People (AU, J2, NC-17, WARNING: SLAVERY) Jared, heir to an intergalactic shipping company, receives a body slave as a sixteenth birthday gift. A very loose sci-fi interpretation of the Scarlet Pimpernel. This fic is not without its issues, but I took on a lot of worldbuilding and plotting and working through complicated consent issues in writing it, and it was a real challenge for me as a writer.
I don't have a masterpost, but I do have an
RPF tag and an
SPN fic tag and the rest of my fic can be found there.
I really just write about things I like (as I think the above list shows), and I like a lot of things. I love the opportunity fanfic gives us to explore relationships of all kinds and in all sorts of contexts. It took me a while, but I think I know why people write RPF AU. ;) The creativity in this fandom is magical to me, and I've tried a lot of new things as a writer because of it. I've also written plenty of things because someone else challenged me with a premise and I ran with it; once I even picked all the plot twists in a fic via LJ poll. I've also written a lot of filthy porn, and I love that there's room to do that too, and to talk about sexual fantasy in a way we often just don't in real life.
Sooo, what do you all want to talk about? Ask me anything!
