April Podfic Roundup

Apr 20, 2012 14:28

What's up in the wonderful world of podfic this month? Well, of course amplificathon continues until April 30th. We're getting some SPN entries even though the point structure favors smaller fandoms. Yay SPN podfic! :)

There's a brand new community devoted to inspiring new SPN podfic, called the cakehole_club. It provides themed challenges for all SPN and SPN RPF parings and gen. The first topic runs from April 15 - June 15 (with signups only until April 25th, so hurry!) and is called "close quarters," for fic about characters sharing space. Posting is whenever the podfic is done, so we don't have to wait until June!

Also going on right now we have remopodmo, which is like the podfic version of nanowrimo, and a Podfic Feedback Challenge. That's "welovepodfic" on Dreamwidth, and even though it's past time to sign up, you could look through the community to get some ideas about leaving feedback. If you love podfic, shower the readers with love - they deserve it!

And on to this month's recs...

recs: outsider POVs

Warm Strangers (by extraonions) and the remix Next of Kin (by dsudis), both read by cookiemom6067. The various people whose lives the Winchesters have touched react to the news that Sam and Dean died in a helicopter explosion in Monument, Colorado. It's so nice to visit with these characters again even though their grief is heartbreaking (but as a listener, the knowledge that Sam and Dean aren't really dead keeps the story in general from being too sad). This is my favorite of cookiemom6067's performances, and these fics are very highly recommended. Next of Kin is from Bobby's point of view.
Gen, rated G, 1 hour. m4b of the pair; Warm Strangers text, mp3; Next of Kin text, mp3. Leave comments for the reader here. As always, use the text links for comments to the authors.

Parental Instincts by dodger_winslow, read by riverbella. Dean's second-grade teacher has a parent-teacher conference with John. He surprises her. This is a fascinating look at John as a parent and why he makes the choices he does. Riverbella's rich voice is a treat for the ears.
Gen, rated PG, 35 minutes. Text, mp3. Leave comments for the reader here. That's actually a link to a whole podzine of outsider POV podfics - check out the whole thing if you're intrigued by the outsider POV concept. (M4b of the 3.5 hr podzine, called Looking In.)

I'll Take My Chance on a Beautiful Stranger by fleshflutter, read by cath. Stanford-era; Dean is beating a rich college kid at poker until the kid's friend Sam shows up and agrees to play in his place. The dynamics between Sam and Dean are exquisite here, as one would expect from a fleshflutter fic. The reader's voice is as compelling as the story.
Sam/Dean, rated R, 20 minutes. text, mp3, m4b. To leave feedback for the reader, use the link on the mp3 or m4b archive pages.
