Hello everyone! I am gigglemonster (usually Dayln03 on my vids) and the lovely oxoniensis has asked me to be the vidder of the month - for which I am incredibly flattered and excited

→ The Second Time Around ( vid) I used film burns for also. (Which I found here if anyone is interested). I just layered a whole bunch of different ones on top of each other and then put the white text on top of that. The whole theme of the vid (and the title itself) was based on the characters repeating their mistakes over and over again. So in AE I made the word "second" a 3d layer and then I would rotate it and as it rotated have it transition into different words (third, fourth, etc). Then I just duplicated all the text layers and put a linear blur on those. I kind of wanted the whole thing to look like a reel of film going around and skipping and blurring.
→ Karaoke Soul ( vid) I actually tried to model after the text in the trailer for Daybreakers. It's probably the most effecty I've ever gotten with my titles. I did it in AE and basically had four separate layers (of the same text) on top of each other and added different effects to each and then offset them. One I had a gaussian blur, one I had a glow, and on one I had what's called "turbulent displace" which is the thing that makes them look shakey and weird. I also made them all 3d layers and keyframed a slight rotation. Then on top of all of the layers I put a blurry black mask that sort of envelopes it.
Overall, I usually just go with a plain black background (lots of times with a simple texture on top) unless the vid in question has a specific color scheme (like the first Chuck vid I mentioned). I usually go with a simple, readable text. 'Roadway' is my favorite. 'Birth of a hero' is a good, slightly distressed looking font. 'Good Peace' is a fun one too. (All if which can be found at dafont.com) Like on any design project I try not to use more than three different fonts max cuz then it just looks cluttered and weird. As far as placement goes, I usually let the song determine that. If it's a slower song with a lot of intro before the lyrics ( like this vid) I'll put the titles at the beginning to try and fill space haha. If the song starts out really strong or the lyrics come in right away ( like this vid) I usually let the titles chill at the end once everything is over.
If you do wanna get fancy with your titles though and have cool effects, I stronnnngly suggest checking out Video Copilot. It's this After Effects tutorial website run by Andrew Kramer and there's a TON of really awesome stuff there. He does a lot of title tutorials but also a lot of just general effects tutorials. I have really learned a lot about AE and it definitely makes you feel more confident messing around and finding cool things on your own.
Again I apologize if this wasn't really the answer you were looking for. If there's anything you want me to expand on or explain in more detail I can totally try and do that :)
