Hello everyone! I am gigglemonster (usually Dayln03 on my vids) and the lovely oxoniensis has asked me to be the vidder of the month - for which I am incredibly flattered and excited

Oh my gosh! A Jawyercita fan?! Awesome! Seriously awesome lol As a matter of fact I would LOVE to make another Sawyer/Claire/Jack vid! I don't have one in the works right now - actually working on a different LOST vid for an auction winner atm. But sometime soon I'd love to vid them again. Any song suggestions would be more than welcome ;)
Hey Dayl! I started viddin after your vids and I remember your older works and I love your more recent work. I was wondering how can you describe your style of vidding yourself and how, in your opinion, it's changed through the years? Because I remember back in 2007-2008 you've been using more effects and stuff and now your videos look "calmer" (but it doesn't mean that they're not that good!), so, I was wondering if it was intentional or not? Thanks :)
I think the shift in editing style was definitely deliberate. I remember when I started vidding I was really in the dark about most of it. Like I said, when I started out I was strictly in the LOST fandom over at LVI. So the vids that I was exposed to at that time were almost all very effect heavy videos. Not knowing anything else I just thought that was the way it was done. I think I tried to experiment with effects and eventually refine and structure my use of them, but for a really long time I just didn't think there was any other way of doing it. (I also think if you do a quick youtube search for vids in pretty much any fandom, those effects driven vids will make up about 80% of your results)
When I eventually migrated over to LJ and started being exposed to other vidders who had been doing this much (soo so much) longer than I had and were sooo much more experienced was when I finally started to realize that there really was a high level of art and dedication that went into vids. Not that I didn't have that in my earlier vids,

because I really kind of want to get back into using effects and coloring and stuff. Exactly! Right now I kind of feel the same. Most of the time I can't decide right away how exactly I want to make and edit my video - whether I want to "show" the music through the effects or I want to show the actual story as clearly as possible.
And I LOVE Blood makes Noise. I think it's a very creative vid. And Melissa is one of my favorite vidders, so it goes without saying :) I'm not familiar with kiki's work, so I'm gonna check her vids out now :) Thanks for the answer!
Hey Dayln; ive actually been a fan of your work for quite some time. My favorites have to be the FNL-cry me a river, and Sam/Jess-Just like you (which I've been looking for that version for ages and have to ask did you edit that song yourself? b/c if so its brilliant.)
so my serious question for you is: When you start a video is it planned or more so like a go with the flow type deal? And do you have a method to how you edit?
Why thank you! The song I used in that Sam/Jess video I did not edit myself. That was just the particular version of the song I happened to have. I don't have it anymore but I can certainly try and look for it for you

I'm thrilled that you're taking part in this Q&A. You have such a distinct and beautiful style and your vids are always a joy to watch.
Hmm, questions. What vid of yours is your personal favourite, and why? (I know it's a bit of an impossible question. :P) Also, what would you cite as your main influences when it comes to your vidding style? Other vidders, and/or professional music videos, and/or other stuff?
Aw, well thanks so much Nicky! I really appreciate that :)
Hmm. I actually think my favorite vid of mine is Tower Over Me, my AU Sam/Duck (BSG) vid. I don't know if it was just a lucky break or what, but I really feel like all of the different elements of the vid work really well together. I think the song had a great tone for the story I wanted to tell with those two. I think the coloring and the textures I used gave it a nice gritty look and feel without going overboard. And I was really quite proud of myself for managing to create a vid with a storyline and relationship that felt believable for two characters who were only in like one scene together lol

I loved Tower of Me! I knew it was you as soon as I saw it on the Bascon DVD, even though your credits didn't come up until the end. :D I agree that it worked incredibly well despite the lack of actual footage of the two of them together. In fact, I think that was the first vid of yours that really made me sit up and go WOW. I love that you could create such an honest-feeling AU out of, well, hardly anything. That understanding of how and why a 'ship works is so important to creating shipper vids and you seem to grasp that so instinctively. :)
I'm actually kind of paranoid though when it comes to using other vidders' work as inspiration for editing techniques and stuff. I'm always afraid that if I do anything that's too similar to someone's that I'll be shunned whether it was intentional or not lol.*nods* Perfectly understandable. At the same time I guess all of us are always building on each other's work in some way, and vidding would be in a very different place now if all of us were just vidding in each of our little bubbles and

I don't have a specific question, but I still wanted to pop in and say that your SPN vids were one of the main reasons I started watching/vidding the show in the first place.
I love the distinctive aesthetic that you bring to your both your vids and graphics. And while your style is continually evolving, it's always gorgeous and always very Dayln (I can't think of a better way to describe it).

And thank you on our second point too. There are so many vidders out there that I think the same thing about, so this is really a lovely compliment ♥
