Below you will find a few fics that have not been given the attention I feel they deserve. I noticed only after compiling the list that a good chunk of them were written as AUs of the season 3 finale (post-Hell speculation), and perhaps got lost in the enormous outpouring of fic that Dean's deal inspired.

Stacking Bones by glassshoe .
Summary: Sam never gave up on Dean, but he didn't save him, either. AU after 3.16.
This remains one of the darkest, eeriest fics I've read in the fandom. The writing is exquisite and perfectly-paced and I was tense throughout the whole thing, and felt no better when finished. This is not a happy fic, so be warned, but the quality of her words was pleasure enough for me. Truly a great story by a fantastically talented and much-underlooked writer.

Summary: Dean comes back from hell and feels a bit different. Sam's different too.
The author does an incredible job of capturing Dean's new perceptions of the world post-Hell while still managing to keep him in character. There is a feeling of freshness and contentment yet we know that something has to give. And give, it does. A painful climb and a burning finish.
The Longest Path the Devil Led: a story in four drabbles by patita_fea .

Each of these drabbles is brilliantly-crafted and razor-sharp, and they explore an idea I haven't seen anywhere else. Poignant and lovely, as is everything by this author.

Let it stand that I think oselle was one of the first people to play with this idea of a Supernatural series that Dean and Sam are forced to contend with -- YOU HEAR ME, KRIPKE? SHE DID IT FIRST! And she did it better -- this is Dean and Sam as they would be in the real world: fucked-up, beat-down, half-crazy, and totally indignant that some pretty-boy actors are playing them on T.V. I love this fic very deeply
Starting to Remember by calamitycrow .
Summary: Sam starts to remember what it's really like to live with Dean. Early Season 1.
This is a cute and funny look at Dean through Sam's eyes as they get comfortable living with one another again. Particularly, Sam's wry amusement and concern over the attitude with which Dean treats his injuries. Short, to-the-point, and as with much of calamitycrow 's stuff, contains some interesting medical equipment ;)

Looking Up by embroiderama . Sam/OMC
Summary: Sam + a taller guy = sex.
Maybe it's the fact that I myself am 6 feet tall and get super-excited when I get with taller men, or maybe it's the image of huge-pawed Sammy getting groped by a guy with even bigger paws, but whatever the reason, this was FUCKING HOT. Sam/OMC is a startlingly delicious pairing, especially in embroiderama 's (small yet) capable hands.
