More than reccing just a few fic, I'm - in a way - reccing a *format*. In a fandom that loves its big bangs, I'm here to urge people to give short fic more attention! (It doesn't get listed on the newsletter so it tends to fly under the radar.) Whether it be at drabble comms like
100_ghosts or
supernatural100 or hidden in comments at pornathons, short fic offers tasty treats in tiny packages. Authors, it's also a great way to build up your storytelling chops: every word counts.
First up three drabbles that showcase the kind of stories that can be told in 100 words.
Little Victories by
dreamboat_kicks - Gen, PG
Failure smells like the copper in Dean’s blood.
Mass Transit by
december21st - Gen, G
The midnight bus always has the same people on it.
Deep in the Forest by
mimblexwimble - Gen, G
When all is said and done, he still can’t bring himself to leave. So he sits at the edge of the grave, feet dangling into its depths...
Next a pair of drabbles in the same Impalaverse - a mini drabble series if you will.
Pure Hell by
lycanthrophile - Gen, PG
He was gone. His brother who never greeted her spoke with the man who drove that handsome Chevelle, carried out him to her, and then placed him in the back seat.
Pure Heaven by
lycanthrophile - Gen, PG
His hands lovingly caressed her wheel as they hit the road at an illegal and unnecessary speed. Not only because they had a place to be, but the rush of speed always made them feel truly alive.
Finally, a masterful drabble series in which a story is told in 100 words three time, but the whole story is revealed when the series is read in sequence. The whole is definitely much greater than the sum of the parts in these brief fic that pack a punch - literally and figuratively.
Seeing Red by
eloise-bright - Gen, PG13 (3 100 word drabbles in a series)
"Don't," Sam says, before Dean can speak. He can’t bear to hear Dean defend him, not tonight, not after what happened.
