She doesn’t know how she’s back here again. She doesn’t know why either. She knows that Samuel’s with her, which is all that really matters. She knows that her grandson, her grown-up grandson who looks like his father, has been to Hell, and so has his older brother, who’s now living with a woman and her son in Indiana.
She knows that Sam has nightmares every night about what he’s been through (down there), and she knows that he misses his brother something terrible. She can’t do anything about the nightmares or the loneliness-Dean’s probably the only one who can cure that, and Sam is adamant about letting him be. To be happy, he says.
Deanna doesn’t know Dean very well, not at all, really, if you don’t count those few days he spent with them in 1973 (and that’s a whole other story Deanna’s got to wrap her mind around, aside from being resurrected by an unknown force after spending nearly forty years dead). She doesn’t know Dean, but she knows that he sure doesn’t look very happy to her. He looks a lot like Sam, actually, even though he looks more like Mary (oh her darling baby Mary) than John on the surface. He looks lonely. He looks like he’s missing his brother.
Deanna doesn’t get a lot of time to muse about her new-found grandsons, though, because they’ve got a lot of work to do. She, Samuel, Sam, and the other Campbells of today-old cousin William Campbell’s great-grandson Mark, Dan’s grandson Christian, and Ricky’s daughter Gwen (imagine, little Ricky having a grown-up daughter)-they’ve got their hands full hunting down evil creatures that aren’t acting like themselves.
This one’s a djinn, Samuel reckons. Sam agrees, says he and his brother went up against one a few years ago. Sam talks about his brother a lot. Sure sign that he’s missing him something terrible. Shame he doesn’t want to go and tell the poor boy he’s alive. It's not her place to say though.
Anyway, this djinn, it’s not acting like a djinn normally does, so they’ll have to go in with caution.
And boy, what fun! The adrenaline rush, the strategizing, Deanna sure did miss the old days of hunting up in Heaven. The real thing is nothing like what they had up there, she thinks as she pulls the knife against the whetstone. She holds it up to examine the sharp edge. Oh yes, Deanna Campbell may be a grandmother, but she’s still a goddamn good hunter, and she’s going to have some real fun tonight.
