“Dad, I don’t think she wants me there at all… ”
“I know about your encounter at the center…” his father said cold. “But is her birthday, I want her loved ones here.”
“Sure, I’ll be there, then. Should I bring something?”
“Just… just come and don’t make her sad. Okay?”
Jared rolled his eyes and promised he’d be good.
***
It was Monday morning when Jensen’s mom was stopped on one of her errands. Jensen stared at a dog, poor thing was walking alone and had no collar. He knew this poor dog, he had seen him around the health center. But then someone said his name and it called his attention.
“… I’ll be waiting for you, God knows we need something to cheer us up.”
“Sure, I’m making a pie for her, you think she’d like that?”
The man started saying his wife would love it.
“See you on Wednesday Donna, thank you, see you on Wednesday at dinner time Jensen.”
“I don’t need to eat.” He said without emotion at all.
“But you will, kid, you will, and you better come to my place and have a good time. Have some drinks”
“I don’t need to drink.”
“Then you’ll sit in front of me and watch me drink.” His mother provided.
“Don’t worry Gerry we’ll be there.”
***
Wednesday came too fast for Jensen’s liking, he was ordered to dress up and get ready to go out at six thirty.
And then he sat as a sulky teenager on the back of his parent’s car was carried to a dinner party.
Wednesday, Jared got ready and went to see his parents. his mom was on a League’s meeting. They had time to get things ready, friends and family started arriving, he was blowing balloons when the bell ringed one more time.
Jared and Jensen looked at each other’s eyes the second the door opened.
“Good night Jared.” Offered mayor Ackles and the boy lowered his eyes and let them in without a word, not until Jensen moved to pass the door, Jared stopped him fighting against his convictions. This, this monster coming to his mother’s birthday as if it were okay was too much for him to accept.
“Something wrong Son?” Gerry was coming closer very fast. “Jensen, do come in, boy, so nice to see you guys.” the man offered to the Ackles family.
“This wouldn’t be a party if you weren’t here.”
While their parents moved inside Jensen turned to Jared, killer look on his face at the idea of the man not letting him in because he was a partially deceased.“ anything to say?” Jensen asked.
“No. not tonight.”
“Because I’m not a scared 12 years old?”
“Because is my mom’s birthday and if you knew my mother, you’ll know you shouldn’t piss her off.”
Jensen’s face twitched, it could’ve been a smile.
“I wouldn’t be here, but my mom is just like that.”
Both boys half smiled.
There was at least 50 people in the house, tables were set on the back yard and a grill was started, a whole pig was roasting in it and beers and soft drinks were offered to everyone.
Jared’s dad took his phone and whistled, his wife was arriving with one of the ladies from the league.
Jensen felt everything like a log haze, shouts and laughter and lights and people hugging and pushing him around and asking him stupid questions, offering him food or drinks.
It was getting late when the younger of the guest joined him on the table he was, they were all talking about him.
“Man, having a second chance can’t be that bad.” Commented a young boy, couldn’t be older than 18.
“I guess, but my friends all moved on.”
“Maybe is time for you to make new friends. ” a red head girl with a sweet smile offered. “have you any new friend?”
Jensen turned at her.
“Yes, I have one new friend, his name is Osric.”
Jared sat next to him.
“Isn’t that the 12 year old my friends were picking on?”
“Yes, that’s him, and I won’t let anyone pick on him ever!”
One of the boys, a little drunk commented on how it was not possible now.

“I know, I was one.” Jensen let out flatly. The whole table got quiet and the boy bit his lips and didn’t spoke again.
“I hope you don’t mind me asking.” A pretty girl who was using a cane asked to Jensen “where were you? Before, I mean.”
“I don’t know.”
“Is there an afterlife?”
“Rache…” Jared tried to stop her.
“No, really I need to know.” She put her cane down. “I have MS, I might die soon, I need to know.”
Jensen looked at her.
“To me, there was nothing, but of course I wasn’t a good person. Osric told me he was on park all the time.” Jensen faced the girl. “You’re nice, and you look like a good person, I bet you’re gonna have a nice place to go.” The girl’s eyes filled with tears and sweet looking red head, Anna, hugged her.
“I don’t know why you killed yourself but…” Gen’s boyfriend and overgrown annoying full of himself guy started a long tyrade.
Suddenly everything went foggy for Jensen, and he couldn’t think straight.
“I just don’t understand why they have to pretend they’re regular people.”
Jensen finally followed the line of the conversation to see Jared’s eyes on him, the man was worried.
“To me is the same thing over and over, the same hate, people used to hate me because I wasn’t like the rest. And once they got over that, they hate the next thing that’s not like the rest, first religion, then race, then sexual orientation, now living status, tomorrow people will be born with something different due to evolution and we’ll hate it ignoring the *rottens*.”
“But you’re making it so simple.” The same giant ass started
“It is simple.” Jensen continued. “You hate my kind.” He pointed to Genevieve. “Why?”
“Because is not natural.” She said fast. “Because I believe that something like death should be final, and because your kind- as you said- does not pay taxes or get a job for long periods of time yet you ask for treatments and for money that could be used in someone that is productive to this society and…” one of their friends raised a hand cutting her.
“Let me cut you there, sweetheart.” A guy that identified himself as Jeremy answered. “face it, you’re afraid of what you don’t know, I’m with Jensen, you guys are just afraid of what you don’t know, or as in Jared’s case think is not fair because your dead ones remained dead, My father passed away in 2009, and he didn’t came back, that doesn’t mean I have to hate Jensen.” and turning to the boy. “Nature did what she wanted, once more.”
Jensen smiled, a reflex, he still had no idea why, debate rose, everyone was giving hateful opinions and Jensen felt his patience running thin.
“People hate things they don’t know, as simple as that, I was hated before being a zombie, I was hated for the simple fact that I was gay and that I had a boyfriend.” Genevieve’s head snapped to Jared’s direction while Jensen got up. “And you can try to find a reason.” He said facing Gen and her boyfriend. “that doesn’t change the fact that you are bad people.” He moved away. “Excuse me.”
Jensen moved to the other end of the yard seeing kids running with fireworks and couples dancing. Among those dancing were two guys, nobody made a fuss about them. And Jensen hated for that.
“You okay?” Jared sat next to him.
“Dominant paleocortex, I was getting angry and I’ve been said I have to avoid stimuli when it happens.”
“You’re gay?” asked Jared blunt and Jensen squared his shoulders, ready for the fight.
“Yes and this fucking town never forgive me for that.”
“I know one thing.” Jared frowned. “My brother didn’t hate you.” And with real hate in his voice. “He was killed because he found your body.”
“Jared, Jeff Padalecki and the red pickup truck gang was the thing I saw in my nightmares since I remember.”
“Bullshit.”
“I was seeing Misha. I was supposed to move with him by Christmas.”
“MY brother was very supportive; I came out to him few days before Collins... before he killed him.”
“Misha killed your brother?”

Jensen faced Jared, things weren’t clear. So he asked for an explanation, wanted to know what happened.
“I don’t really know, I came home that day. School was cancelled because of the shooting.” Jared sat next to Jensen and his eyes were fixed in some point around his parents dancing and some kids sharing candy. “We were sent home. Sheriff Anders offered me a ride, and I heard his radio, they said there was a man, running around shooting people. They mentioned his name Misha Collins, 25. They said to look out for the red pickup gang, that was Jeff, and Tahmoh, and JD, and few others, they said three were dead already.” And sighing, Jared continued. “I was sixteen, and I was scared that my brother was killed.”
“…and he was…” Jensen added in the same emotionless flat voice.
“Yes, he was dead, I couldn’t even go to the burial, I came home and my parents packed me to a boarding school in Boston that same night. I never heard of what happened to Jeff.”
“My brother Josh was part of the red pickup truck gang too. He was two years older than me.” Jensen confessed. “He moved out of town because he said the guys left were mean and nothing good would happen with them. I wonder what they did to Misha for him to react like that.”
Jared sighed, remembering the pictures of Jeff and some older guys from the group.
The red pickup truck gang wasn’t a real gang, just young people who never left town that used to buy a red pickup truck as their first car, most of them left the so-called gang once married or once life took them away or into responsibilities. Josh Ackles moved on because he was sent by his parents to college against his will. That was the perfect example of how guys moved on.
“I wanted nothing more than to be old enough to have one of those stupid trucks.” Jared snorted.
“My brother left me his. But I was not good enough for that club.”
“My brother… I came out to him, and he said nobody will hurt me because of who I loved.”
“And that was the very reason why Misha and I got hurt all the time.” Jared made a sound and Jensen faced him. “So, you’re gay”
Someone stopped the music and the lights went down while Jared’s father came out with the giant cake Gen’s mom baked for her.
Jared ran to help and everybody started singing Even Jensen.
Jensen was forced to have a slice of cake, even if he couldn’t hold it in his stomach, he was coming out of the bathroom after he throwed up to find Jared walking out with more beers.
“You okay?” Jared surprised himself with those words.
“Mrs. May forced me to eat some cake… I can’t eat yet…”
Jared moved closer to look at him, Jensen did looked rosier these days but still was dead pale and now the light tinge of green made him smile.
“You look half dead.”
Jensen eyes shot to Jared, and he tried to ignore the joke, tried not to find it offensive and out of nowhere as if it were bubbling inside of him causing steam, laughter exploded out of him. So hard and so loud it surprised both boys, Jared’s mom innocent cat and both got still when the music suddenly stopped and voices asking what have been that noise were heard from the backyard.
Jared looked around and turned back to Jensen who had a hand over his mouth and a look of mortified horror.
“Didn’t know you could do that…” Jared commented while giving Jensen few of the beers.
“Neither do I… I think is the first time I laugh in more than five years.”
Once they gave the beers to those still around Jared sat next to Jensen, he might be more violent and had super strength but he was always tired, as if his body weren’t full awake yet.
“Look at them.” Jensen commented feeling Jared near him, they were the last young people there, and most of the others were older, around the age of their parents. “I wanted nothing more than that.”

“Have you ever been inlove Jared?” Jensen faced his new friend. “So absurdly inlove that you think the world is great when he’s with you and the worst place ever when not? That no matter what you’ll fight to be near the person you love?” Jared was looking at him. Jensen could feel the weight of his eyes on him. “A love so big that you feel your heart will stop if that one person doesn’t love you back?” Jared gasped. “I loved Misha that much. I was just in too much pain and I was ashamed and was too proud and too scared of saying the truth, and now everything I loved is gone.”
Jared swallowed the beer on his mouth and the painful lump on his throat.
“Not everything, your parents are here, and your brother and sister, they love you” Jensen let out one of those grunts every rotten… partially deceased - Jared corrected himself- let out when angry. Your father… he did so much for you, you gave this whole town a new life, to me, to guys like Danny and Ethan.”
“But what about Misha?” Jensen got quiet, felt his fingers numb and his teeth were shaking and his legs felt like coils pulled taut. He had cried since he came back, he thinks he did, but he still couldn’t cry for his lover. Jensen got up, his hands flexing as if holding something, his muscles tense and he walked into the night.
People went home after good byes and more hugs and congratulations. There were only few families left, old friends chatting and having fun. Jared wished he could have that one day, but Zachary went to college and he was left alone, at the corner of his eye he saw someone moving, he saw Jensen sitting near the house and moved to talk to him.
“I did.” Jared sighed before taking a sit next to Jensen and keep talking. “You know… love someone.” And his finger played with the bottle trying not to say anything too stupid. “At school, he was one year ahead and I loved him from the moment he sat next to me for breakfast the first day.” And sighing again got up “but it didn’t work out and we should change subjects because I don’t want to sound like some kind of stupid novel.” He moved to pick up some dishes cleaning a table, by the time he was back from the kitchen Jensen had more dishes in a pile and was cleaning napkins and empty glasses.
They worked together to leave the house as clean as it was before the party, Jared told Jensen how their parents became friends because of the tragedy, how the whole town became something different, and how the whole town was there when Misha was laid down to rest.
“When we walked this fucking town.” Jensen was holding a glass. “People didn’t even turn to see him, nobody even answered when he greeted them. They were all praying for my soul. Because I let myself be corrupted by that depraved man from the city. They stopped me on the street to say how I was going to hell. Misha was a good person and still he was beaten to an inch of his life by the same people that were on that picture my mother has on her stupid book. Yet they had the guts to go to his burial?”
Jared took the glass from Jensen’s hand, grasping his hand. Weirdly he was warm. Jared thought all rottens were cold.
“It surprises me too, he killed my brother. I wasn’t here. I read it on a newspaper.” Jared stopped his hands on the soapy water and faced Jensen with a frown and a brilliant idea. “You know there’s this center, Hopeful Hearts. It has a library, everything from this town’s history. After you died this place became something of a beacon supporting same sex couples rights and all that.“
Jensen looked at him not understanding his reasoning.
“I always wanted the answers my parents won’t give me and other avoid… and maybe you could… you know.” Jensen had his eyes closed trying to rein his temper.
“Are you saying that there’s a whole center dedicated to gay couples? As if we were circus freaks?”
Jared rolled his eyes.
“You’re missing the point, I’m sure we can find answers there, to know about my brother and to know about your boyfriend.”

They agreed to go to the center the next weekend when Jensen didn’t have treatment and Jared weren’t working. But then Osric had an episode of rage, as they called to those moments of inevitable anger triggered by some memory. Jensen got in the middle of the fight and ended up confined for the weekend. At least Osric would have a friend

Jared came home frustrated, he didn’t want to over think the fact that he was looking forward to see Jensen again. Maybe it was because he was Jeff’s age, maybe because he was gay, maybe because that cold bitterness Jensen irradiated was like a definition of what he felt inside.
He stayed for a while trying to find something to do. He finally gave up when the curtain and a fishing cane looked to him like a lacrosse stick, and he turned and saw someone on the TV screen with clear eyes that looked to him like Jensen’s.
He had a beer and the coldness of the bottle made him think about the warmth of Jensen’s hand.
Frustrated, and surprised he sat looking to the window, thinking about the first time he felt attraction for anyone. He was hardly 13 when he saw the last game of his brother’s time in school. he remembers green eyes and a smile that could melt the poles, and a laughter that sounded weir and endearing. He felt inadequate and small and stupid for liking a guy Jeff’s age. And felt like he couldn’t breathe because he liked a guy.
“Enough!” Jared jumped to his feet and ran out of the house without aim.
Once he filled his tank and bought gummy bears he decided one thing, he’d go to the health center. He’d visit Jensen.
The door opened and the green eyed police officer he saw the first day when he met Jensen was there.
“What are you doing here? Are your people coming too?”
Jared felt his face hot while asking to see Jensen. A lady nurse led him to see his new friend.
Jensen was sitting on the bed looking to a small form in the bed next to his. The small body was restrained, but was still trying to get free, twisting and turning and groaning.
“Hey.” Jared greeted moving closer. “Heard you couldn’t make it, so I came to visit…”
He could finally see the person tied to the other bed, it was the 12 years old kid.
“What happened to him?”
Jensen didn’t turn.
“Ask him, he’s angry but he can hear you.” Jared felt stupid when he started.
“Hey kid, I’m Jared, I’m here to see Jensen. We’re friends now…” the young body turned.
“You hate us, our kind why would you want to see him!!” and he let out a growl so scary Jared moved back in fear. “Don’t you dare to hurt him. I’ll rip your eyes out!!”
Jensen moved forward and stood near the bed.
“He’s right, we’re friends Os…”
The kid blinked, the same empty clear pupils from every rotten…- partially deceased!- reminded himself Jared once more, were fix on Jensen.
“I never had a cool nickname before… Os, sounds great.” And Osric smiled, calming down a bit. “I guess I’d have a cool nickname if it weren’t for the leukemia.” The kid kept pulling on his restrains.
Jared looked around.
“What’s that?” Osric was looking at the bag of gummies peeking out of Jared’s pocket.
“Candy…” He got some on his hand and looked around. “Can you... can you eat?” and turning to Jensen. “He throwed up after he got cake…”
Osric had a smile on his face.
“You throwed up after eating cake Jay?” and the kid snickered.
Jensen nodded.
“I’m like a month old Os, I’m not quite ready for food…” and looking at Jared and the gummies. “What about you?” asked to his new friend.
“I’ve been here for almost a year already… my mom was scared of taking me to the center because of the militia.” Jared felt uncomfortable and said he was sorry. “I’m already eating jell-o and soup.” Osric sounded as if it were an achievement.
“You think you can handle this?” Jared got close even when Jensen tried to stop him; Osric growled and started moving trying to grab anything that was close to him.
“I can I know, hurry!!”
Jensen got close too, holding Osric’s hand to stop him. “Breathe kid, and he’ll give you candy.”
It was as if the candy were a drug because in seconds Osric had his eyes closed and was still.

Jared sat next to him ignoring the words.
“How come you can’t eat while the thing I…*killed* found after it murdered a man was preparing fries and chicken nuggets?”
“She!” Jensen corrected him. “I’ve heard of that, I’ve heard of you killing a woman after she murdered the guy who beat her and her child. Did you even ask why the kid was asleep in the couch?” Jared blinked. “She’s kind of a legend in the center. The kid had bruises all over his body. She made the bastard who abused her son when she died pay for what he’d done.”
Jared’s mouth fell open, and he killed a woman who was only defended her kid and making dinner for him. Suddenly all this made no sense, not at all, for a start can you kill what no longer is alive?
“HEY!” Jared blinked and noticed the clear eyes of Jensen on him. “seems like that doesn’t sounds good for you.”
Jared let out a breath and messed his hair.
“No it doesn’t…”
Kevin had his eyes closed but was humming.
“You didn’t know and apparently many things had been said about the people like me…”
“That’s so stupid…”
Jared was mad without a reason and he got up moving fast to the door.
“Jared?”
The soft childlike voice from Osric stopped him dead on his tracks.
“Can I have some more gummie bears please?” Jared moved back and offered the kid some more, this time Osric smiled, a real honest to God smile.

Jensen had to walk across the parking lot of the center as usual asking to see Jared among the picketers, one of the guys got close with a bucket of pig blood and Jensen turned at him. “I dare you, I’m not like the others, and I would kill you.”
Jensen’s mom was late and he needed to talk to Jared about their aborted trip.
“Calm Down your rotten boots, kid.” Gen’s asshole boyfriend was in front of him. “What you need?”
“I’m looking for Jared. I need to speak with him.”
Even for a giant ass as Genevieve’s partner he was quite decent. Jensen thanked him and walked away, as usual most people just let him pass, not even daring to lock eyes with him.
He took the cell phone he had and called mom, told him he was walking to a friend’s house.
“Who? Jensen you cannot go around on your own you know that…”
“I’m gonna be okay mother. I’ll be seeing Jared.”
So he walked. Once at Jared’s home he felt his resolution fly away, he can't just knock on the door and say what? *Hi. We’re supposed to go find out what happened to your brother and my lover!*
He didn’t have to, a car stopped behind him and Jared came out of it.
“Jensen?” Jared was dressed in slacks and a button down. And he felt weird standing on his driveway in front of Jensen.
“I’m sorry for coming without invitation.” he moved closer to Jared. “I think we still have to take a ride.”
Jared nodded and asked him to get in the house while he changed. Once alone in his room Jared felt stupid, he was trying on his third shirt and rolled his eyes in dismay.
He took another one, the first from the drawer and walked out looking for his keys and coat, he found Jensen holding Jeff’s picture. The guy on the picture had his fingers covered in something white.
“That’s Jeff.” Jared Informed. “You remember him?”
Jensen felt the short circuits on his brain firing again. It was like reviving everything a bit at the time.
“What happened to his hand?”
Jared moved closer, he couldn’t remember.
“I think he had an accident, he said some kind of animal attacked him.”
Jensen had flashes in his head, he remembers he went into the ice cream parlor while Misha was waiting for him outside checking on some pumpkins to take home for Halloween. He could almost taste the blackberry and cream flavored he picked for himself. He chose passion fruit and papaya for Misha, the freak always like this kind of weird things.
He passed the door and saw the group of people bunching around something. He looked around and couldn’t find his boyfriend. Jensen felt once more the same anger, and saw flying long brown hair flying over the face of the guy, the one that was punching Misha in the face. The guy turned when Jensen shouted and he finally saw his face.
A Crack called Jensen attention while Jared was taking the framed picture from his hands.

“What the fuck, Jensen!” the glass was broken and Jared cut his hand while taking it away from the rotten’s hand.
“I have to go…” Jensen was disoriented. He kept seeing flashes of Misha trying to pry him away from the man, while the rest were running away, stupid boys, he said, all looking the same, all with the same stupid haircut.
“Wait!” Jared held his arm. “What happened? I thought we were going to the memorial center…” it wasn’t Jensen’s fault Jared knew it the moment the fist hit his face. Something had to be wrong with his friend.
Jensen felt as if he were trapped inside a movie. “I’m gonna make you pay stupid, I’m gonna make you pay!!” He had the guy’s shirt on one hand while the other kept landing over and over on his face, someone was holding him, it has to be Misha, because it felt gentle, the guy tried to hold his wrist, it had blood on his fingers when Jensen twisted them back until they cracked loud. He felt how someone let him go and the next thing he could focus on was Sheriff Anders, Sheriff Mark H Anders, was the plate on his desk.
“Little things like you must learn a lesson. Boy” and he bent over Jensen's chair inhaling on his hair. “I guess it’s because you look so much like a girl, a pretty, very pretty girl.” Someone chuckled behind them and Anders looked over Jensen’s head. “wanna watch? Huh?” the man looked around and Jensen noticed he was alone. There were no other people.
He noticed his feet heavy as he stumbled out Jared’s house gasping for air- it surprised him, he hadn’t felt he was breathing until now- he felt again the pain and the shame, behind his back he could see a man, shaggy brown hair, very tall, laughing and saying dirty things, how he wanted to go next, how he should be a good bitch.
“You know what I wonder?” Anders asked while something was shoved into him. “Who is the bitch? Your freak boyfriend? Maybe you? Because nobody can deny it, you’re pretty, with those lips… Damn, those slutty lips.” Jensen heard the sound of the camera going off over and over and blinked trying to keep all that behind. Then he noticed a car in front of him when it honked the horn for him to stop.
Jensen couldn’t recognize the street he was on. He could hear voices in his head and felt the burning sensation around his waist and lower back, searing pain. He felt his legs as if weighted a ton. “This is for your own good buddy, maybe that freak won’t want you now… you could have a normal life.” Arnett groaned against his back. “But I could do this forever.” And with a moan the man came inside of him, praising him, how good he felt, how tight he was.
He sat and held his head on his hands. He sat there until it was dark and he could control his thoughts, he wasn’t ready to face his parents.
After a long while he finally had the courage, Jensen took the phone his mother had him carrying and speed dialed 1
“Jensen!! OH My God!” His mom sobbed and Jensen started crying too, none of them said a word until Jensen’s dad took the phone.
“What happened? Where the fucks are you?”
“I don’t know…” Jensen sobbed and closed his eyes trying to concentrate. “I remember dad, and I felt it again, like it happened today, it won’t leave me alone, I remembered that day.” Another sob and silence from his father. After a couple second he heard a sigh.
“Son, I’m going to pick you up, don’t move, and don’t do anything stupid, This time I’ll protect you, on my life, Jensen, this time you’re not alone.”
He was sitting on a sidewalk by the time the lights of his dad car illuminated him, and in seconds he had his father’s arms around him, while he sobbed desperate his father was promising everything would be alright, Jensen couldn’t see how.
***
Jared had to wait another three days to see Jensen, he was still surprised for how his friend, he thinks about a rotten as a friend, go figure, couldn’t see him again. It was ridiculous, both were way older than this, yet here he was asking to Jensen’s mom if he could come out to talk to him.
“Jensen is not feeling well, sorry Jared.” It shouldn’t hurt him this much.
Reply
Jensen was on his bed back to the door, his shoulders shaking and the soft sounds of how he was crying. Actually, tears streaming down his face. An IV line was attached to a very pale arm. Jared stopped at the door surprised.
“Doctor ordered him to stay home, he has to avoid stimuli Jared, please… don’t make him upset.”
“What happened? Jensen’s mom turned and was about to speak when they heard the voice.
“Why don’t you ask the rotten instead?”
Jensen’s mom tried not to let her sob be heard. Jared caressed her shoulder looking at her eyes meaningfully as he entered the room. He moved to sit at the edge of Jensen’s bed against his friend’s back.
“Okay. What happened. Jensen?” he had no answer. “You left and I was really scared you weren’t felling okay.” Once more he glanced at the door Jensen’s mom was watching.
“I am a very fucked up creature.” He made a sound you could be confused with a chuckle or a sob.
“Something happened when you saw my brother’s picture.”
For a beat there was no answer.
“Jensen? Do you remember my mom’s birthday party?” Jensen let out a noncommittal sound. “You said my brother was in your nightmares. But you still had no memories, why you said that?” and taking a deep breath bracing himself for whatever was to come. “D-did he hurt you? Did he forced… did he force you to…”
“No, I killed myself for a different reason, but your brother and his friends knew why…” Jensen finally let out a sigh, as if his tears were over. “I did all that to myself.”
“I just… I wish you could get better soon.” Without thinking Jared’s hand was resting on Jensen’s arm.
“Go away…” Jensen let out in a growl. “I’m still too angry to talk…” Jared could hear the crunching of teeth. “Please, I don’t want to …”
He stopped talking, Jared was up and moving.
“I’ll be back tomorrow…” offered Jared. “I’ll bring a book or something, so I can distract you.”
“You don’t have to.”
“But I want to… I’d bring gummy worms but I don’t think you can eat them.”
“Is not like depression, stupid. This is emotions coming back. You cannot change what’s not under control yet.”
“I’ll try.”
“Do you know? Is this out of pity or Guilt? Is this about your brother?” sniffling. “about what happened?”
Jared stood there, something cold and heavy filled his stomach.
“Is there something you remember about Jeff?”
Someone knocked at the door, a tall man with green eyes and red lips faced him.
“You should leave.”
“I’m just…”
“You’re just here bothering my baby brother, he needs peace, he needs time to recover not someone picking on him. OUT!”
Josh Ackles wasn’t a big man. Not even as tall as Jensen and he weren’t as muscular either, but he had this aura of power and Jared had to obey.
Once on the hallway he spoke again.
“Is your militia bothering partially deceased in their homes now?”
No matter how hard he tried the man didn’t let him explain himself. Still he vowed he’ll be back the next day to see his friend.
***
Jensen opened his eyes feeling a deep ache, a pressure in his stomach and a feeling of despair. He blinked was it fear? Were the memories again?
Suddenly something hot moved on his leg and he got up loudly. Stumbled out of the bed and ran into the bathroom cursing loudly. He was peeing.
The sound of struggle and then the liquid splashing porcelain had his parents up in seconds.
Jensen’s mom cried seeing her son doing something as natural and common as peeing.
Josh joined them and observed as his brother asked his mom to leave the bathroom and please close the door while still peeing.
“Come on. Dear.” Mayor Ackles held his wife and pushed her out of the bathroom, but she wouldn’t go far from the door.
“Why are you so excited about, mom, he’s just peeing…”
Josh was as excited as his mom, this meant only one thing: the treatment was working. His brother was almost human again.
“Tell me you’re not gonna take pictures, like the ones from when you were potty training him…” mumbled the oldest Ackles rubbing his stomach and yawning.
Jensen groaned from inside the bathroom.
“Yes, Jay, we still have those pictures.” Josh taunted before turning around and going back to bed.

He found his mom sipping a cup of coffee. It was way too early for anything else.
“Mom?” she turned smiling, it felt as if she were proud of him for peeing, which made no real sense.
“Hello honey, we’re going to the doctor in an hour, get ready…” and moved closer to him hugging him and kissing his cheek.
Something was still stinging at Jensen’s mind. Something else was happening.
“Mom? Why is Josh here?”
He could hear his dad humming softly as he entered the kitchen.
“sweetie.” His mom started. “I don’t want you having any other episode… just because you’re in this small town with all those memories in every fucking corner…”
Mrs. Donna Ackles never swears, never! So hearing that word on her mouth made Jensen believe he understood.
“You want me to leave? With him?”
“It’s for the best.” Mr. Ackles got close to them, just in case his wife would need protection. “You spent almost a week attached to your bed, Son. We don’t want you to have a reason to feel like that again, people in this town are-” he couldn’t complete the sentence before Jensen shouted.
“You just wanna get rid of your shame! Let’s get rid of the black sheep, Your inconvenient little freak!”
“It’s for your own safety!” shouted his father.
“I’m afraid.” His mother was almost crying. “I don’t want to lose you again. Can’t you for once hear our side of the story before getting all worked up over nothing?”
Jensen sat and heard how his parents had nightmares those first ten days he was on the center, how they feared the regret the whole town felt for what he was forced to do and for the abuse he endured will run down and they’ll start harassing him again.
“And, my wife? She will love you baby bro, her sister came back too, she has experience in zombies sensorial rehab.”
The fog was back, Jensen only heard mumbling under the acute sound of anger on his ears.

Jared went to see Jensen the next day to find the house empty, he waited for a couple minutes, maybe Mrs. Ackles didn’t want him to see Jensen but he’d fight for his right to see his friend.
Someone knocked on his window and when he rose his eyes saw Josh Ackles’ face.
“Why are you watching my parent’s house?”
For a second Jared felt it was stupid to say he just missed Jensen but nothing else came to his brain. He only noticed he said the words out loud when Josh smiled and looked away.
“What am I supposed to think of that kid?”
Jared looked at him.
“That I’m Jensen’s friend?”
Once more Josh smiled, he moved back a little and made a motion for Jared to get out the car and follow him into the house.
“Don’t do this to yourself, Jared. Jensen is leaving with me as soon as he’s cleared from the center.” Jared blinked a couple times. “I’m taking him somewhere else, somewhere he can start over, without any of this shit hanging over his head.”
Jared huffed and mussed his hair not knowing why this was bothering him so much.
“Seriously… Why you care so much about my brother?”
“I don’t know, maybe because I don’t really have friends here anymore, and Jensen is different from the kind of people I’ve met before.”
“And is that difference what made him a freak, that difference made my baby brother kill himself. I won’t let anyone hurt him again. You hear me Jared?”
“He wasn’t the only one hurt, Josh, My brother, myself… many people were hurt because of what happened with him.”
“You? How come you were hurt? You were a kid!”
“I was pulled out of my house, sent to the other end of the country, where I had nothing!!” Jared motioned with his hands as if swatting something away.
“I was alone and people used to mock me, and fear me because what kind of monster I had to be to be sent away and not even allowed to come back for holydays or summer?” Jared closed his mouth and sat down calming himself a little. “Have you any idea how it feels to be surrounded by people like you, and be the only one of your kind at the same time?”
“No…” Josh lit a cigarette.

“I do…” Jensen was standing at the door. “I lived my entire life feeling like that, I died feeling like that. Not even my brother was there for me Jared, and yours only pushed me to the edge every time he could.”
“I protected you!” Josh was up and moving to Jensen. His voice was loud and Jensen moved a hand in front of them.
“Mom’s in the kitchen, keep it down.”
“I protected you…” repeated Josh. “I had to go, you know that, I was forced! I had to go and there was nothing I could do.” He blinked and inhaling deeply. “I left Ty to keep an eye on you, he was my second, Jay,” and took a long drag from the cigarette.
“He did, even if not at school at least out of there. He did, until the accident.”
“I heard that’s how you met Misha in the end.” And Josh smiled seeing the embarrassment in his brother’s face. “It’s good to see your old bitch face Jenny”
Something like a smile pulled Jensen’s lips.
From outside the room they heard Mrs. Ackles voice.
“Joshua Aaron Ackles! You better not be smoking in my house or help me God,
I’m gonna smack you with a wooden spoon like when you were ten.” The lady entered the room and saw three sets of green eyes on her and blushed. While her older son was fumbling manically around to put the cigarette off.
“Good Afternoon, Mrs. Ackles.” Jared Greeted jumping to his feet.
“Hello Jared… nice to see you.”
“Nice to see you too, Ma’am” Silence fell and Jared felt the need to fill it. “I came to visit Jensen. I see he’s feeling better.” The boy smiled and letting out a breath turned to his friend.
“Yes!!” the lady enthusiastically responded. “He’s much better, we’re just coming from the doctor and we had great news…” Jensen’s mom looked at him as encouraging him to talk. Jensen felt it was too personal to say anything about his body functions to a new friend. But when nothing came out his mother made a gesture for him to talk.
“Jensen went potty last night.” Josh teased. “All by himself and didn’t miss.”
Jensen rolled his eyes and groaned, this was the most human he’s been acting since he came back. And his family felt pleased.
“My kidneys started functioning last night, yes…”
“Doctor said he can have some water now!!” Mrs. Ackles chirped excited.
“That’s awesome!” Jared sounded happy and honest and Jensen smiled by reflex to that tone of voice. “Congratulations.”
Josh scoffed and moved toward his mother.
“Keep your congratulations until I come back I’m gonna do just the same my baby brother did last night.”
“Oh you, silly boy.” Mrs. Ackles smacked jokingly his arm as he passed by. “Do you need anything Jared? Can I offer you something to drink?”
Jared could recognize a hunt when he hears one so he said yes please and Mrs. Ackles left the room.
“Thank you for coming.” Jensen looked at Jared’s face before sitting in the first chair around. “I’m sorry my brother was interrogating you.”
“It doesn’t’ matter, he’s worried about you.” Jensen huffed. “Really, he’s just looking out for you.”
“I know, and it pisses me just the same.”
Jared smiled, he wished he had this kind of relationship, but of course his brother passed away almost five years ago and he didn’t had the second chance Jensen and Josh had.
“What were you and Josh talking about when I entered?”
Jared felt his face getting hotter.
“I was talking about my time in boarding school.” Jensen made a sound of understanding. “I know it was not as bad as you had but it was hard.”
“That’s why you said you felt alone?”
“Yes, you know how it is, here me, you and few others… we’re big fishes, we rule, the mayor’s son, the mill’s owner’s son, and some others.”
Jensen nodded.
“Where I was… I was a minnow.” And Jared looked down. “I was one of the less fortunate ones, and they used to bully me, I was left aside because I had nobody ever going to visit, and Christmas I was always there, and gossips were I had killed my brother, raped a baby sister, set the house on fire.
One said I had horns and hooves.” Jared joked trying to make the memories less painful. But Jensen was looking at his face surprised.

“Here you go boys…” Mrs. Ackles sat a tall glass of lemonade in front of Jared, it looked delicious and for first time since he was back Jensen felt like he could drink something.
“And… here’s for you. Sweetie.” She put a glass of water with some ice and a lime wedge in front of Jensen who looked at it grateful, it was almost as tempting as Jared’s own.
“What about me? momma” Josh was coming into the room. “I went to the bathroom and even washed my hands…” Jared and his mother laughed Jensen didn’t.
“Are you implying I didn’t?” Jensen asked serious. “We both know; brother, who’s the one that had to be hosed down in the back yard for not wanting to bath an entire summer…” Mrs. Ackles and Jared let out small laughs. “You always lose when is about embarrassment Josh.”
“RED WINE!” shouted the older one.
“CONDOMS” answered Jensen.
“JOANNA” Josh got closer
“ARMAND!” Jensen replied, his brother was about to say something when their mother held both of them.
“Now, behave…” Mrs. Ackles called in a strong voice. “You two. Seriously! Don’t you see we have guests?”
“Is not a guest, mom, is Jensen’s new boyfriend that’s all.”
It was like a ton of bricks fell on the room, Mrs. Ackles gasped and the three men got quiet.
“Jay… I’m sorry.” It’s all in a second, Josh moves forward to his brother, Jensen stiffens, then moves forward without hesitation hands raised clenched in tight fists before his mother calls his name and he hesitates for a moment. Josh was bracing himself for the inevitable pain.
Jared did it by instinct; he had Jensen’s hand in his.
“Jensen, don’t… I don’t have any gummy bear. You better don’t get mad.”
Maybe it was the randomness of the comment, or the meaning behind it, Jensen chuckled, uneven and goofy, just like the day at Jared’s house.
“I shouldn’t have any yet…”
Jared smiled and Jensen for first time noticed his dimples, and how innocent and young Jared looked when smiling.
“Let’s walk a little.” Jared offered looking into Jensen pale dead eyes. “I promise I’d respect his curfew…” Jared said over his shoulder to Josh. “Just don’t spy on us Josh, if you don’t want to find us kissing.”
Jensen giggled, like a school girl at the hilarious disgusted face his brother made.
“Let’s go. Jared steered Jensen to the door while looking intently into Mrs. Ackles’ eyes.
Jensen frowned, confusion and something else, mischief*?* on his eyes. “You’re not planning to kiss me, do you?”
Jared tried so speak but everything was drowned by the laughter coming from inside the house.

It’s Gen’s boyfriend, Mark Pellegrino who spots them first and parks his red pickup truck very close to them. Jensen stares at the car in anger and keeps walking away while the man greets Jared.
“Hey there JarPad, I was looking for you, there’s this picket we’re organizing to go to the capital and since you-” he got quiet seeing Jensen walking ahead before keep talking. “Ditched us yesterday and the day before…” and smirked at him. “but of course you were with your new best friend.”
“Look, Mark, he just had a…” he couldn’t explain himself.
“You dead banger, traitor, all you needed was a pretty one, huh?” and punched Jared straight in the jaw. “You can’t even respect your brother’s memory.”
Jensen was looking at them from few feet away, Jared up and ready to fight and Jensen didn’t move back. Jared punched Mark back and the man laughed, he was stronger, if not bigger. Before he could do much more, so Jensen was closer, feral pale face on, eyes overly open, pupils dilated, like two black holes.
“Jared, please let’s go… or I’ll hurt him.”
Jared saw Mark retreat and cleaning the blood from his split lip considered for a moment the idea of letting Jensen hurt him, but he was just too much a decent person for that.
“Let’s go Jensen, we could get to the fucking center before something like an apocalypse happens. ” Jensen smiled, the same mechanic smile he had all the time.

Jared turned to Mark and shouted for him to leave, the bastard took a knife from his pocket and started taunting Jensen.
“Come on, rotten, come on, I’m gonna slit your fucking rotten neck.”
A police cruiser was flashing them and the siren calmed them, Jared cursed under his breath while Mark hid his knife, Jensen was looking at him still unable to control himself.
The officer driving climbed down and addressed them.
“What is happening here?”
“Nothing!” Mark barked. Still the officer turned to Jensen.
“Are you here by your own will?” Jensen blinked not understanding. “You’re a partially deceased among two well known trouble maker militians. I have to know you’re okay Jensen.”
“The fuck is with you and this specific rotten?” Mark was perplexed.
Jared turned to Mark while the passenger door of the police car opened slowly.
“Look you two, I don’t care if you want to rip each other’s eyes out, do it on your own house so we don’t have to interfere until one or both of you douches are death…” said the officer, and directly to Jensen. “It is dangerous for you to stay here, come on.”
“Jared is my friend now…” Jensen offered a little self-conscious.
The second police officer climbed down.
“Is everything clear?” Sheriff Mark Sheppard came out of the car. Sheppard put Jensen to a side with the deputy and then Jared and Mark at the other end of the car.
“Is he the new sheriff?” Jensen hadn’t seen the man yet. He at least looked competent and serious.
“I don’t know about new… He’s been sheriff since I came into town four years ago.”
“What happened to Anders?”
“Nobody knows…” the man looked into Jensen's eyes. “He disappeared on October 12 2009.”
Sheriff Sheppard turned at the sound of Anders name before facing Jared and Mark again.
“You two will leave Jensen Ackles alone and I won’t put your sorry asses in jail, capicce?” Both men were looking at him. “Not that I mind to throw you two in jail, is just that I bet there are better things to do.” The guy faced Jared. “Jared, aren’t you supposed to go to school or something? Many others would sell their souls for a chance to go to Stanford.”
“I need to find my place in the world again. I was going to Hopeful Hearts.”
Sheppard looked into his eyes. “there’s nothing for you in that place.” His voice was low and dangerous, Jared was scared, the man without turning shouted for his deputy to bring Jensen close.
“We three will be going to the station, Pellegrino, get you stupid ass out of here.” He pointed to Jensen and Jared. “Rocky and Bullwinkle, get in, we need to talk.”
“What?” Mark didn’t understood or was just stupid enough to recognize the threat. Out of nowhere Jared saw Sheppard hitting his friend in the stomach with his flashlight.
“Don’t make me repeat myself.” Sheppard’s voice was sorrowful. He faced the other three men. “Car, NOW!”
Once the patrol was moving Sheppard turned on his sit.
“I’m doing you two a favor and saving you a million complications boys, stop looking for trouble. Don’t ask questions. let’s all just accept we live in a better town now.”
“I can’t” Jensen let out without thinking. “I died a horrible dead, I lost everything I had, I just want to know why someone else did the same I did.”
“You were the warning. He was the wakeup call Jensen.” Sheppard tried to explain himself but couldn’t find words finally gave up and sighing sat properly.
“What about Mark?”
“Is not only him, Padalecki; that douche and you are in trouble.”
“NO!!” Jensen was still fighting the fog on his head. “You’re not taking Jared alone.”
Sheppard looked at Jensen. Jensen understood he knew what happened. “Is not like back then. Trust me.”
“I’m going with Jared.”
“Suit yourself boy.”
Jared turned to see Jensen’s face wondering what happened to him. Then something else hit him.
“Josh is going to kill me… and your mom too.”
“I was thinking just the same.” Jensen smiled, a real smile, like the smile he gave his brother. “Why I always end up in trouble when I go out with you”
“Quiet you two.” Was shouted from the front sit and the boys obeyed.

“Jensen lets go.”
Jensen didn’t move.
“What about Jared.”
“His parents are on their way, move.”
“NO without Jared, and Mark, is Mark okay? Is he alone?” Jensen’s father moved closer facing his son.
“This is my fault Jensen, I’m sorry, but now it’s safe, nothing is going to happen to them.”
Jared had a big picture of what happened to Jensen, but nobody had details, nobody aside of the sheriff and his parents actually knew, still the worried voice of his new friend moved him, he was even asking for Pellegrino, the one man that did nothing more than offend him and call him names since they were introduced to each other.
“Now come on.”
“I’ll wait until they release Jared…” and sat closer. “I won’t let anyone alone knowing what happens here.”
With a low curse Mayor Ackles left the office
“Thank you.” Jared smiled trying to show how really grateful he was. That’s why the question was coming. “Are you really going to live with Josh?”
“That’s what my parents want. He works for the national program to treat partially deceased, he has answers.” After only a beat he kept talking. “Why you stayed? You could be in Stanford!”
“I don’t know, I don’t belong there, I don’t want to spend the rest of my life feeling like that.”
“Tell me about Zachary.”
Jared never talks about it, so he did what he usually does.
“I will if you tell me why Josh said Joanna.”
Jensen let out a short laugh and turned to face the wall.
“She was my only girlfriend. she was…” and motioned to his mouth and then his crotch. “You know…”
Jared felt a strange twist in his stomach at the idea of someone going down on Jensen. “And when I…” He made another movement with his hand. “I called Josh’s best friend’s name.”
Jared snickered, trying really hard to stop the laughter.
“Its okay, laugh… you haven’t seen Ty Olsson.”
Jared did saw Ty, that’s why he stole his brother’s yearbook. Ty was tll and muscular, strong jaw, pretyy faced, very masculine, soulful blue eyes and a smile that could melt icebergs. Ty was his go-to facet to jerk off when he was a teenager.
“OH!! But I have… Ty Olsson? The back-liner?” and Jared made a sound.
“I should have told you about why I said Armand.” They snickered once more when the door opened.
“I’m glad you find this funny.”
Jared’s father was there.
“Hello Dad.” Jared blinked surprised. His relationship with his parents was cold and distant but he needed someone who could take him out of there. “Let’s go you two.”
Mayor Ackles and Josh were outside the door.
“What the hell Jared.” Josh asked.
“This is our fault.” Jensen moved forward passing next to his brother and father. “I was too angry to control myself, Jared was only helping me, so was Mark. I just want to go home.”
Sheppard faced Mrs. Ackles and Mr. Padalecki seeing the boys walking away.
“Not now Sheppard, you know why.”
***
Jared woke up the next day with a phone call, he kept putting school on hold but this time they said he’d lose his place if he didn’t start right away. He’d have three days to decide and the lady hung up.
He was staring at his phone when it ringed again, this time he only heard a voice.
“You want answers? Come see me tonight, 9pm crossroads demon’s bar.”
Jared stared at his phone again was he sleeping it was hardly 8 am.
Once more the phone on his hand rang and once more it was a number he didn’t know.
“Hello?” this was out of control for him.
“Hello Jared. Wanted to know if you are up to go to…” Jared sighed he had so much in his head he couldn’t deal with it right now.
“NO, Jensen, sorry, not today.”
“Oh…” the voice was soft and disappointed and Jared kicked himself for ever making Jensen sound like that. “Okay, bye.”
Jared sat there staring at his phone half waiting for it to ring again, half gathering courage to call Jensen back.
What was wrong with him?
That same morning, Josh came to Jensen’s bedroom to find him up.
“What? You don’t sleep?”

Neither of the boys told anyone else, not even each other, whatever was about to happen would be a surprise.

Jensen tried to sneak out of the house until his brother found him near the front door, he had to say then he’d be seeing Jared.
“I’ll drive you!” Josh had his keys already even if their parents were still telling them not to go.
“No, Josh, I’m fine, I’ll walk.” Three sets of eyes were fixed on him. “What?” and marched to the door. Flashes danced in his head, over and over again about the one time he snuck out like this barely 17, too nervous to do anything else, and too horny to consider being caught. That one time he went to see Misha. The guy was setting a telescope, he had a blanket and coffee, they made love that night under the stars.
Jensen heard a horn, once more he lost time, it happens to those partially deceased, he was so lost in what his brain was bringing back he didn’t noticed he was close to the bar already, and that he was right in the middle of the road.
Passing the door he heard country music, the smell of beer and cigarettes hit him and he moved forward to the bar.
“You’re the Ackles kid right?” a tall lady looked at him up and down. “there.” She pointed with her head to a side and Jensen saw Sheriff Sheppard there. The man saw Jensen and made a movement with his hand for the boy to get close.
“Hello kid.” He offered the chair in front of him before starting the talk. “I know you need some answers, right? And your parents won’t give you any.”
Jensen sat looking straight into the other man dark eyes.
“Why should I trust you?”
“Because I have sins in my conscience. And I’d like to clean it out.”
Jensen settled on his chair. And let Sheppard talk.
“I was just a deputy back in 2004, you remember me?” Jensen made a face, even in his inexpressiveness Sheppard knew the truth “I bet you don’t… ”
The older man sighed and took a swing of his scotch. “I was destined here on May, and I saw you and Collins around, I remember because he was the only person in this shitty town that greeted me as if he really wanted to be my friend, he showed me around.”
Jensen closed his eyes pushing the fog away, this made no sense, what this man was saying? That he had a crush on Misha?
“SO when I saw him… cuffed and bent over Sheriff Ander’s desk… I swear… I lost it!” he let out a breath through his nose and started picking as his bottle. “I remember rumors of what happened to the Olsson guy and… I was afraid.”
“WAIT! Wait…” Jensen sighed too and looked around before rubbing a hand over his lips, suddenly he felt them dry. “Ty Olsson? He had an accident!”
“No, it wasn’t, rumors said he was stopped by Anders few hours before they found his truck on the Sioux fall’s pond.” Jensen had his eyes fully open in surprise. “Rumors at the station said he threatened the sheriff, something about what he had done to him.”
“I… I was a low rank deputy when all this happened, but I knew we had to do something, I spoke to your father when he was only a council member.”
“I know, he said Mayor Banks was Anders’s uncle.”
“And Anders could get away with pretty much anything.” Sheriff Sheppard finished.
“What happened to Ty?”
“I don’t know, for sure. All I know is that Anders used to bully him since he was in high school. Poor thing had it bad after your brother left. Everyone knew that.”
“I didn’t.” Jensen tried to explain, he felt that if he could’ve seen or hear anything, he could’ve be there for Ty.
“Your brother knew, that’s why your father was okay with what happened.”
“What happened? You’re not being clear.”
“I just… it’s complicated.” Sheppard rubbed his face. “It was October tenth when I heard we had a boy that killed himself. Word at the police station said Anders had you arrested after your fight with the red pickup truck goons.” Jensen nodded and turned to a side, it was awkward to have someone who knew what happened. “When you came with the accusations, I couldn’t take it anymore. I knew Olsson, and Collins. I liked them before you appeared.”
