Jared was once the world knitting champion, but after a tragic accident in the 2004 Woolympics where he dislocated his thumb, his speed and coordination was never the same and he was forced to retire. He moved back to his hometown in Texas to work at his parent's yarn shop, but he swore off knitting and hasn't purled another stitch since.

Osric has just moved into town and needs a new hobby. He wants to learn how to make those knitted animal hats with ear flaps. Jared tries to fob Osric off by pointing him towards knitting pattern books but Osric keeps bringing in his sad attempts at hats and Jared just can't help telling him where he went wrong and showing him how to do it right.

Along the way Jared rediscovers his love of knitting and finds himself falling for this quirky newcomer.

He knew right away that something was wrong, terribly wrong, because his sock, his going to medal again for sure, creamy white sock was suddenly soaked with ruby red. Hell, he thought, not really feeling anything. Unless he could get the sock to soak in a sink full of cold water almost immediately, the stain would probably never come out. Only after he had that thought did the burning pain come through and he looked at his hand, his left hand. The hand that now had one of his triple zero, stainless steel double-pointed knitting needles stuck right through it. It had gone into his palm, right through the meat in-between thumb and forefinger and come right out the other side. He'd been unlucky enough to hit an artery or something, because blood was gushing out in bright red pulses around the entry and exit wounds. His thumb was also hanging at an unnatural angle and even though he looked at it and concentrated, he couldn't move it ( ... )

In the end, it was nothing else but his hand. He was a bit battered- bruised all over, including his ribs, which was no fun. But his thumb was dislocated as well as fractured, the ligaments around the joint had been torn to hell. The knitting needle hadn't just impaled him. It had impaled, then ripped through the muscle like a cheese slicer. It had hit an artery on the way through his thenar eminence and a nerve as well, making the thumb pretty much numb and unresponsive. Not that he could move it while it was all casted up ( ... )

OP here! Oh my gosh, this is perfect!
I'm not actually a knitter but I love all the details here, it makes Jared's passion for knitting feel really real. I laughed at several times during the fic; honor among knitters, Jared's six books on knitting socks etc. And what a terrible injury, brought down by his own knitting needle!
This is so entertaining so far, thank you so much for taking on this prompt! <3

I'm glad you like it and find it entertaining. I'm a little worried I've been throwing in too much knitting stuff and haven't even gotten to the romance yet.

So good so far! I can't wait to read more. I'm a picker (not a thrower) too, which works well for me being left-handed, so hearing about such a horrible injury to his left hand just had me cringing for both reasons. Although I bet those socks were gorgeous!

And lol, people always have the most fascinating reactions when you say that you knit. Especially if you're a guy. They often don't know what to make of it. So the doctor's reaction just cracks me up. But I love it when people are passionately creative, so seeing Jared so passionate about his knitting just puts a grin on my face. I really can't wait to read more...

Yeah, people do look at you oddly when you knit or say you knit. Part envy, part weird fascination, part 'why the hell would you do that?" I'm not a guy, but still get very weird looks sometimes. Or odd comments. The best knitter I've ever known personally is a guy. He's this big biker looking type with a bald head and a white beard. He knits these incredible cable sweaters and, because he does Highland games type stuff, his own kilt socks.

Anyway, thanks for your awesome comment. Sorry I've been slow updating. I got inspired to cast something on, even though it's been a while, and that's kind of cut into my writing time.

lol, I can so understand that. It's quite possibly the only downside to having more than one hobby is the way they compete for your time. Especially when it comes to writing vs knitting. Because sometimes when I'm knitting my mind wanders and I start writing a story in my head. But I feel like the motion of stitching is helping my thinking, so I don't want to stop knitting in order to write it down. But that could be just me. I don't know any other writer/knitters to know if other people have that problem ( ... )

Nobody knits like this where I live, so there are no knitting pins for sale in my country. But it's just so freaking relaxing, especially when working multi-colour.

knitting pins= knitting needles, right? If you can't find them in your country, you can probably get them on the internet. I buy a lot of my yarn and supplies from small sellers on Etsy and the sellers usually pretty good about international shipping.
