Filled: "Hard Candy" (Sam/Gabriel, human AU, h/c) [4/?] anonymous April 10 2013, 11:52:48 UTC
He ran the wet tissue along Gabriel’s jawline.

“Did he have his box?”

“Box?” Sam asked, distracted by a brief flutter of Gabriel’s eyelashes.

“With the sweets,” Lucifer said slowly, as if he was talking to a particularly stupid child.

“Oh, yes, I put puffed rice cakes in there, he probably ate those.”

“You what?”

Lucifer’s tone suggested he’d watered Gabriel’s candy with cyanide.

“They’re much healthier,” Sam argued. “It’s not like candy has any valuable nutritients he could miss.”

Lucifer paused briefly and continued in a tone that suggested he was overwhelmed by Sam's idiocy:

“I thought you were his little boytoy. How do you not know about his insulinoma?”

“His what?” It sounded much to medically specific not to spell desaster.

“He has constant low blood sugar, as you’ve just found out with trial and error, smart boy.” Lucifer’s tone was dangerously even and low now.

“He never said a word!” Yes, he had, Sam realised. Shit, he had, and he’d sent Gabriel out with nothing but his rice cakes. Sam was teetering on the edge of full-blown panic now. “I mean, I didn’t know he meant that. He sounded like he was joking!”

“Alright, Sam, who have you been going out with? When does my brother ever sound like he’s serious?” Lucifer took a deep breath. “I’m coming to get him. Just call the ambulance if he has a seizure, give him candy and try not to kill my little brother while you’re watching him, you jackass.”

With that, Lucifer ended the call, leaving Sam as pale as a piece of paper, staring at the phone in his hand. The way Lucifer had talked, it sounded more like ‘I’m coming to get you’ and Sam knew it would have freaked him out if it wasn’t for Gabriel unconscious on the ground demanding every bit of his capacity for concern.

“... ‘s wet.”

Sam all but dropped the phone on the floor. Cold trembling fingers were faintly clawing against his wrist and Gabriel gazed into his general direction, eyes unfocused. He’d been pressing the wet tissue against his throat for a minute now, Sam realised, drops of water pearling down Gabriel’s neck and chest.

“Hey, Gabriel.” He flung the tissue aside, leaning over him. “Gabe, can you hear me?”

“Well, y-you’re speaking,” Gabriel muttered, glancing nervously around.

“Alright, I’m gonna get you to the couch. Ready?”

Gabriel nodded, though Sam wasn’t too sure he’d really understood. He carefully wriggled his hand under Gabriel and wrapped one arm around his shoulders, then pushed the other under Gabriel’s knees, lifting him off the ground. Gabriel’s head fell against his chest and the fact that he didn’t protest about being carried worried Sam more than the omnious mention of ‘seizures’ (althout that came in a close second).

“How do you feel?” He asked as he’d sat him down, draping Gabriel’s legs over the armrest.

“Like I was hit by a train. I’m... I need...” He tried to sit up, but Sam pushed him back with one hand on his chest. Under his fingers, Gabriel’s heart was beating fast as a running rabbit.

“I know, wait. I got you.” Sugar, he needed sugar. With two strides he was by the plant and retrieved the coke, opened it on the way back and held it to Gabriel’s lips as he gently helped him to lift his head. Sticky liquid ran from the corner of his mouth as he drank and Sam wiped it away with his sleeve after he’d closed the bottle.

“Better?”

Slowly, Gabriel nodded his head once. When he leaned back to close his eyes, Sam was afraid he was going to slip back into unconsciousness.
