Warnings (I suck at these, so I hope this is right): shmoop, nc-17 (I think), sex, angst, Bottom!Jared, hurt/comfort,

The hard thing about being on your own, Jared thinks as he walks to his job at the coffee shop, is that everywhere you look people seem to be paired up. Sam, the owner of the coffee shop, is married to Jim and when Sam drops off Jim at work Jared can see them kiss over the seats of the car. He sees teenagers holding hands and making out. He sees old couples still looking like they adore each other, and that is worst of all. Even the pigeons outside Jared’s shitty apartment have been making cooing noises and building a nest together. In the early mornings, trying to find the strength to get up, Jared hears them and feels lonely and old, even though he is only 20.

He gets to the “Uncommon Ground,” and ducks under the red awning to open the frosted glass door for the morning. Inside, he wipes down the dark wood counters and sets up the shiny wood chairs and tables for customers before setting up the pastries and the coffee machines.

By 8:00 the first regular appears - a good-looking, green-eyed man who started flirting with Jared shamelessly about two weeks ago, when he first dropped by. Jared feels his palms start to sweat. The last few days he has tried to be in the back in the mornings, but Sam must be running late and he is on his own. Green-Eyed Man grins wickedly and leans over the counter.

“All alone today?” he asks Jared. Jared gulps. “Sit with me?”
“Would you like a coffee?” Jared almost adds the words “sir” as a reflex but changes his mind at the last minute.

“I’d like to have a coffee with you. Medium, black. My name’s Jensen, by the way.” Jared turns around and fiddles with the coffee machine. He wishes Jensen had ordered something more complicated so that he could keep his hands busy. All too soon, the coffee is poured into a mug and handed across the counter. Their hands brush when Jensen reaches to grab the mug from Jared and his fingers gently linger over Jared’s palm, making Jared blush and look around, even though he knows that no one is there.

He stutters out the price and Jensen pulls out his wallet to pay for the coffee. Jared grabs the bill quickly, making sure their hands don’t touch.

“Are you sure I can’t persuade you to sit with me? Or maybe go to dinner with me?” Jensen looks up at him with pleading eyes and Jared considers. Then he backs away from the counter, slowly, shaking his head. He wonders if he looks as stupid as he feels.

Jensen continues to drop by every day after that, and eventually Sam starts teasing Jared about his “boyfriend,” something that Jared denies with an almost pleading voice.

At night, he lies awake staring at his faded ceiling and wonders how much effort would be needed to find a new job - one where Jensen wouldn’t find him. Then he considers how stupid that is, because he does want Jensen to find him and wants Jensen to do all sorts of other things to him, too. This last thought has Jared squirming every night. Several times, his hands drift to his sleep pants, but he snatches them away. He remembers his father raging about gay men and how disgusting they were and how God would punish them. Jared buries his face in his pillow, trying to drown out both his father’s words and the fire in his belly when he thinks of Jensen.

He ends up being tired many mornings because of his late nights with no sleep. Jensen seems to notice.

“Are you OK? You seem quiet. Well…quieter.”

“M’fine. Here’s your coffee.”

They go on like that for two more weeks before Jensen comes in one morning with a good-looking brown-haired man he introduces as Chris. Jared feels his heart sink a little as he watches them punch each other in the shoulders and huddle around a table, laughing.
Stupid, you’re stupid, he thinks to himself, not even aware he is using his own father’s words. It makes sense that someone like Jensen would find a boyfriend. What amazes Jared is how open they are, chuckling and talking. Something squeezes in Jared’s chest as he imagines having something like that. He turns around and starts wiping down the counters when he sees Jensen glance up at him. No use thinking of that.

The next morning, Jensen is in without Chris and asks Jared to dinner again. Without thinking about it, Jared says yes, and then stares at Jensen, mouth open, horrified by what he’s just said.

Jensen doesn’t look horrified. Instead, his face lights up in a big smile that shows off white teeth and crinkles at the edges of his eyes. “Great,” he says very quickly, as though scared Jared will change his mind. “How about we meet at 6 tonight? At Lucky’s on Havensham Rd? Is that OK? They have great steak.” Jensen flees the coffee shop after that, before Jared can even squeak out a word of protest.

That evening, after his shift at the coffee shop ends, Jared showers and then stands in a towel in front of his closet. He is already sweating and he feels tremors in his legs and arms from sheer nerves. He wishes he had Jensen’s number so he could call and cancel. What in hell had he been thinking? He thinks about just not showing up, but he’s a Texas boy and while his father may have put the fear of God into him, he also taught him manners.

So, clothes. Jared takes a deep breath and stares into his closet, panicking again. Jensen always shows up in the coffee shop in suits. Probably works in one of the nearby office buildings. Jared has cheap jeans and t-shirts to wear under his work apron. He doesn’t have going out clothes because he doesn’t go out. Jared lets out a nervous giggle in the empty apartment, slapping a hand over his mouth. He feels so nervous he might throw up. For about the millionth time in his life, he wishes he had a friend - even just one - he could call. He could really use a few nice words and some advice right now. How pathetic is it that the only person he can call is his father - the last place to get a kind word?
In the end, Jared settles on his one button-down black shirt, his newest pair of jeans, and boots. He tries to tame his hair but gives up in despair and gets to Lucky’s ten minutes past 6, a little breathless and sweaty.

Inside, the place seems part bar, part diner. There are round stools and tall tables everywhere, waitresses with large silver trays and a huge stage area. A huge wood bar takes up one side of the establishment. Jensen is standing by his table in the back, waving at Jared.

“I wasn’t sure you’d show up,” is the first thing Jensen says to him, with a huge smile. “It’s awesome you did. My friend Chris is playing tonight. You met him at the coffee shop.”

Jared looks up to where a band is setting up and nods “Friend?”

“Yep. Buddies since kindergarten, buddies even after he became girl crazy and I found out I was gay.” Jared wondered what it felt like to have a friend like that but nodded again, unsure what to say.
After they both ordered their steaks and settled in, Jensen leaned forward. “I’m so glad you agreed. I was starting to get a complex, man. You were turning me down so often.”

“S-sorry,” Jared mumbled, glancing down at his plate.

“Hey, it’s ok.” Jensen made a move to touch Jared’s hand but Jared pulled away quickly, looking around at the other diners.

“Oh.” Jensen glanced down at his hands. “Jared, are you not out?”
“I - I just never..” He glanced up at Jensen hopelessly, not sure what to say.

“You’ve never tried dating guys?” Jensen seemed puzzled but his tone was kind. Jared wasn’t sure how to explain that he had never dated anyone so he shook his head.

“Hey, it’s ok.” Jensen smiled at him. “It’s just a surprise, that’s all. A good-looking guy like you…”

Jared glanced down at the beer in front of him, letting his bangs fall in his eyes. Jensen thought he was good-looking? It was so ridiculous. No one in 20 years had ever thought he was good-looking and now the most gorgeous guy he had ever met was telling him that he was the good-looking one? It was ridiculous. He shook his head again.

“No? You don’t think you’re good-looking? Seriously, Jared, have you seen a mirror?”

“What is it that you do?” Jared tried bravely to change the subject and it worked. They talked long into the night. Chris joined them at the beer before leaving and they left many hours afterwards, long after the wait staff had cleared off all the tables.

“Would you like me to drop you off?” Jensen asked, keys in hand.
Jared wiped his damp hands on his jeans. He didn’t want Jensen to see where he lived. Wasn’t ready for Jensen to see him. “No thanks. I can walk from here.”

“You sure?” Jensen was suddenly closer and Jared could smell his aftershave, something woodsy and soft.

“Yes, I -“ Jared’s answer was swallowed up by Jensen moving in and pressing his lips against Jared’s. Jared’s mouth tingled and he looked up into green eyes.

“It’s ok, Jared.” Jensen winked and smiled. “No one out here. No one will know.”

Jared didn’t even feel the chill on the walk home because that kiss - his first kiss - kept him warm.

Jensen showed up every morning after that at the coffee shop. He got to know Sam and Jim, brought Jared CDs of music he liked, and took Jared to the zoo, to dinner, to the movies. It was a good thing that Jared had saved up money by not going out, because he was finding that dating was expensive. He liked to pay for some of their dates, even though Jensen always offered to pay. Jensen dropped him off at his apartment building now, but he never came up. They only went as far as soft kisses and holding hands, although Jensen was careful to make sure no one saw.

“So, when did you figure out you were gay?” Jensen asked over lunch one day.

“I dunno. I guess I just never saw girls the same way, but it didn’t seem to matter. It’s hard to meet people…” Jared let his words drift off. He was sure that someone like Jensen had no trouble meeting people, but to his surprise Jensen was nodding.

“Yeah, I know what you mean. Would your family not have been supportive? If you did want to come out?”

“It was just my dad and me growing up. And, no. Yeah, he would not have been…supportive.” Jensen had just nodded and Jared hoped that he understood. There was a lot that was so hard to say to Jensen. How do you explain years of loneliness, of sitting in your room alone because you have no friends? Thankfully, Jensen had let the subject drop.

After three months of dating, Jensen suggested that they rent some DVDs and order pizza. He said it casually over the phone and Jared nearly dropped his own phone.

“Hello? Jared? You there?”

“Yes, I’m here.”

“So what do you think? My place?”

Jared glanced around his own space. He was embarrassed to let Jensen see his tiny apartment, but he could guess what a night in meant. He was nervous about it, and was sure he’d feel more nervous in Jensen’s place, which was probably huge and posh. He took a deep breath. “Maybe my place? Saturday?”

“Sounds great!”

Yeah, sounds great, is what Jared thought on Saturday afternoon, when he was frantically tidying up his place as best as he could. He had tossed a blanket over the back of the couch, cleaned every inch of the apartment, and had put down fresh bed sheets. He had been pretty sure his face would burn off with blushing when he had to go to the drug store for lube and condoms, but they were safely stowed in his nightstand. After five minutes spent looking at websites, Jared had logged off his computer more nervous than ever. He just hoped Jensen would know what to do. Jensen had never pushed beyond kisses and Jared hoped that he would proceed at a slow pace tonight.

By the time Jensen arrived in the evening, Jared had showered four times. He had washed every place he thought Jensen would touch and had worried about his clothes and his body. He worked out but he wondered if Jensen would go running when he saw what Jared looked like. Jared’s too-tall body and weird skin with moles weren’t anything like Jensen’s model looks, after all.

So by the time Jensen had arrived, ordered pizza and settled them into Jared’s couch, safe to say that Jared was nervous. His hands were sweaty, which was mortifying and he was starting to understand what the term “sweating bullets” meant, since he was sure the drops of sweat he could feel gathering at his hairline were the size of bullets.

Jensen popped in a movie and snuggled closer to Jared on the couch. Jared tried not to squirm away but he didn’t want Jensen to see the tension in his body or see the sweat.

“Hey, Jared? You OK?”

“Oh, yeah.” Jared went for casual but one look at his boyfriend’s face told him that Jensen was not fooled.

“You know, I’m good with just watching the movie. No pressure, you know. At all. We can just kiss - or not even that.” Now Jensen sounded nervous and that helped Jared relax a little, weirdly.

They were saved from further talk by the arrival of the pizza but as soon as Jensen placed the boxes in front of them, he turned back to Jared.

“Hey, Jay? Seriously, are you Ok? I - I could leave, if this is too soon.”

Jared snorted, feeling humiliated. “It’s not too soon. It’s been months, and you’ve been so patient and I -“

“What is it? I know you mentioned you haven’t dated men. Is that it? Because -“

“Haven’t dated anybody,” Jared muttered, mostly to the couch cushions.

Jensen looked shocked. “I. Okay. We could. I.” Jared stopped Jensen’s fumbling by leaning forward and kissing him. They kissed until Jared’s lips felt numb, until they were both tangled up on the couch, blanket and cushions askew.

“Is this Okay? Are you Ok with this?” Jensen was softly stroking Jared’s face, as though he could memorize every plane and mole. Jared thought about pointing out that he just had a shitty apartment, no friends, and wasn’t out yet. But he was tired of feeling like a loser. Jensen had chosen him for some weird reason and whatever happened later, Jared wanted this now. He surged forward and kissed Jensen again, his hands wandering, lost and without intent, over Jensen’s body, sometimes slipping under clothing. Every time his hands touched Jensen’s skin, Jensen groaned and panted into his mouth.

Jared felt he was about to explode when he took Jensen’s hand and led him to the bedroom. Once inside, he leaned down and kissed Jensen. Jensen growled and led them to the bed, holding Jared’s head as he bounced them off the mattress.

Clothes were shed slowly, with Jensen whispering soft words and making sure Jared was fine with everything. Jared’s mind had all but closed down for the night and all he could do was whimper and nod when Jensen asked if he was ok. There were more touches, licks, and soft bites, until Jared felt that every inch of his skin was on fire. He reached over and pulled out condoms and lube from his nightstand drawer, pressing them into Jensen’s hand and wrapping his larger hand around Jensen’s fingers.

Jensen looked at the supplies and nodded. He leaned forward and kissed Jared, harder than before. “This is easier if you are on your hands and knees.”

Jared shook his head vehemently. He wanted to see everything, and Jensen seemed to understand. “You’re so gorgeous, Jare. So sexy. I want to make this feel so good for you.”

When Jensen lubed up his fingers and slowly circled Jared’s hole, Jared felt as though he might hyperventilate. Jensen kept whispering soft words and distracting Jared with soft kisses while he slipped his first finger inside. It burned and made Jared shake but there were more whispers and kisses until Jared was relaxed enough for a second and a third.

Having Jensen’s fingers inside him was like nothing else he had ever felt. Jared’s cock was so hard that he could practically feel his heartbeat displaced in the purple head. A quick glance down showed him that Jensen was also in a similar state. When Jensen’s fingers pushed and explored, they touched something inside him that made him shake and screw up his eyes, black dots dancing behind his eyelids.

“That’s your prostate,” Jensen whispered against his neck.

Jared found his voice then, beginning Jensen pleasepleaseplease, although he didn’t quite know what he was begging for. Jensen withdrew, slipped a condom on, and pushed forward, opening Jared up like he had never been before. The movement and sensation made Jared arch his back and grab onto his boyfriend’s biceps. Jensen was moving forward painfully slowly, inch by inch, and Jared could feel everything. It was as though his body was extra-sensitive. He could feel sweat beading on his own skin, the brush of Jensen’s belly against him, the soft hairs on Jensen’s legs, and Jensen’s cock, hot and hard, filling him up. He could feel his heart hammering in his chest and the roaring in his ears.

Jared wanted to warn Jensen of the dull roar climbing up his spine, but there was no time and before Jensen was half-way inside, Jared was arching his back more, his body seizing and his throat opening with a scream as he came. It felt like he was coming for hours, caught in the moment while his cock pumped itself dry. His orgasm caught Jensen off-guard and he came with a grunt inside the condom.

Both of them collapsed onto Jared’s bed, panting and sweating into the sheets. Gently, Jensen withdrew and held onto the condom. Jared turned away, face bright red, unable to look and afraid to witness what he would see in Jensen’s face.

Jensen disposed of the condom and ran his fingers through Jared’s hair. “Are you Ok? I didn’t hurt you, did I?”

Jared curled over further, pushing his face into a pillow.

“Jared? Jared? Are - are you upset?”

Jensen leaned over Jared’s still form. “Jared? Jared, you’re scaring me. Do you regret -? Does something hurt? Please, please talk to me.” Jensen sounded frantic now and Jared heard the rustle of clothes as Jensen got dressed. Jared tried to hold back tears, but it was touch and go. He’s probably getting dressed so he can leave, he thought. The thought made his belly feel liquid with fear and embarrassment.

Jensen was suddenly crouching right by the bed, gently lifting Jared’s head from the pillow. “Please talk to me.”

“I’m so, so sorry,” Jared whispered.

Jensen sat down on the mattress and frowned. “Sorry. Sorry about what?” He placed a warm hand on Jared’s should and started rubbing slow circles into the tense muscles. “You have nothing to be sorry about. I shouldn’t have gone ahead. I should have waited…”

“No!” Jared sat up, displacing Jensen’s hand. “It felt so good. But I came so fast. Too fast. I tried not to…” Jared glanced down at his navy sheets. He could see stains - their stains - dotting the thin fabric.

Jensen reached out for his shoulder again. “Are you kidding me? Jared that was so hot. I came just as fast as you did, you know. It wasn’t too anything. It was perfect - at least for me. I hope it was something - special - for you too.”

“It was. But I wanted…”

“We have all the time in the world.” Jensen leaned forward and kissed him. “I love that you’re so sensitive.”

“Really?” Jared hoped his voice didn’t squeak.

“Really. If you’ll let me, I’d love to show you how much I liked it - and you - again and again.”

Jensen tucked both of them into bed, their hands still moving slowly over skin, tracing patterns.

“You’re amazing, Jared. I know that for some reason you don’t believe that. But I intend to show you how amazing you are.”

They fell asleep, sticky and sated, by morning.

The End.
