Reposting here to give them, or someone else, another opportunity.Sir Gerald Padalecki is an officer in HRH's Army fighting abroad for the empire in a distant land (France or India or the colonies) when his life is saved by the quick and selfless thinking of Private Ackles. Padalecki is fantastically grateful and offers Ackles money or a promotion-- anything he might want. Unfortunately Alan suffered a mortal wound in his act of bravery and wishes only for the safety and well being of his child, Jen. Gerald is only too happy to fulfill Alan's last wish, and despite the hit the family reputation might take, sends word to his unmarried son Jared to seek out Jen Ackles and marry her-- for what better way to see for the safety of a young woman than to marry her into money and title? They spoke of inconsequential things: the condition of the roads from London to Devon and of the health of Jared's mother and sisters, and at the end of the dinner, when Jensen poured Jared a glass of truly terrible Madeira, Jared had made his decision.

And, unlike his easy acceptance of marrying potential gutter wench Jen Ackles, he found himself slightly more troubled at the idea marrying the apparently very well-bred Jensen.

It wasn't as if same-sex matrimony was unheard of; after all, the country was saved from further war when Richard the Third made his timely proposal to Henry the Seventh thus ending the War of Roses. Likewise, the marriage of Elizabeth the First and Mary Queen of Scots would have cemented the Anglo-Scottish alliance well before James the First, had there not been the small matter of the Catholics refusing to acknowledge Elizabeth's legitimacy. And lord knew, the fad for all things a la Hellene made sapphic and ganymedic (if that could be said to be an adjective) friendships practically de rigueur. However ( ... )

OP here. OMG. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! This is utterly delightful and exactly what I had hoped to see when I posted the prompt. The language and vocabulary is absolutely PERFECT. Almack's! Terrible Madeira! I love every perfect touch of this, all the delicious details about food and manners and visiting cards and gossip.

I sincerely hope you continue the tale, (as you've left it on such a cliffhanger!) and that you get piles of feedback from other anonymous admirers.

As for me, I'm going to make a cup of tea, as is appropriate, I think, and read what's here all over again!

This is wonderful! You are doing an amazing job and I hope you'll continue - I can't stop trying to picture Jensen's face, though I'm also curious to hear what position he had in mind (parson?) and why he doesn't think it would suit him.
