This might be a weekly feature of the comm. Sunday mornings we'll post whatever didn't fit in the previous lists, then start posting the new recs Sunday evening.
Sunday Grab Bag Recs (what didn't really fit anywhere else)
Miscellaneous, mostly short fics here.
Title:
While You Were GoneAuthor/Artist:
_seraphina_Rating: G
Length/Word Count: 640
Warnings/Spoilers: none
Summary: Dean drinks his coffee black, straight up.
Reccer's Comments: Poignant look at Sam and Dean's changing relationship through the lens of how they each drink their coffee.
Title:
ThirteenAuthor/Artist:
MinkmixRating: R
Length/Word Count: medium
Warnings/Spoilers: General to all aired ep in USA
Summary: (from the author) An unnatural kind of serial killer decides to make Hunters its victim of choice...
Reccer's Comments: I love this story because it's an unlikely outsider POV that we rarely see of the boy's lives.
Reccer's Caveats: There's nothing too bloody or gruesome.
Title:
Let's Play TwoAuthor/Artist:
brynnmckRating: PG-13 for language
Length/Word Count: approx. 4800 words
Warnings/Spoilers: Set in July 2006, no spoilers
Summary: Sam is rapidly going from "concerned" to "fucking freaked out," because Dean quiet and motionless for so long is just wrong, Dean without a snappy comeback, Dean uninterested in drowning his sorrows in a fight or a drink or a woman whose name ends in "i," and Sam isn't sure what to do.
Reccer's Comments: Sam uses Dean's longstanding love of baseball to coax his brother out of a bad case of the glooms. This is beautifully told, and jam-packed with brotherly affection. One of my all-time favorites.
Reccer's Caveats: Tiny, one-sentence mentions of Jess and of Dean's interest in one-night-stands
Title:
There'll be peace when you are doneAuthor/Artist:
lyra_wingRating: PG-13 for language
Length/Word Count: approx. 1800 words
Warnings/Spoilers: None
Summary: It sucks to know your fate.
Reccer's Comments: Another story written back at the end of Season 1 - I love this look at Dean's view of his own life and his expectations for the future, from back before things *really* went South.
Title:
Saving People...Author/Artist:
dolimir-kRating: G
Length/Word Count: 1,593
Warnings/Spoilers: Cancer surviver, no spoilers
Summary: Are you an angel, Dean?
Reccer's Comments: This is Annie in remission and Dean spends one day with her (He arrives with an armful of daisies). The day spent goofing around charges both their batteries. Lovely and sweet, good characterisation.
Title:
Through the eyes of a childAuthor/Artist:
geminigrl11 and
kalywRating: G
Length/Word Count: 2700
Warnings/Spoilers: none, none
Summary: A chance meeting brings back reflections of the past.
Reccer's Comments: This story is set in the town with the boy in the grocery store. Sam keeps running into the boy and his sister, which serves as a catalyst for Sam to reflect upon Dean caring for him as a child. There is a lovely note of hope/love throughout the story.
Reccer's Caveats: The analogy between the children in the story and Sam and Dean is a little hit-you-over-the-head by the end, but as Sam is mulling over his childhood it is to be expected.
Title:
Blood and Wine are RedAuthor/Artist:
kroki-refurRating: pg13
Length/Word Count: 1900 words
Warnings/Spoilers: No warnings, spoilers to Nightshifter
Summary: Eventually, one of those boys is going to get caught
Reccer's Comments: Sam is caught, this is on national TV, and people react across the nation. Sam is in the story very, very little (Dean even less so), but that doesn't matter because the purpose of the story is to look at the lives they touched and how those people react to the news of Sam-alleged-multiple-murderer. I read this before I read the story it was based on, which meant that the background for the people that the boys helped in that story was unknown to me, whereas I knew about the background of those they helped in canon (and this felt right to me.)
Title:
Everyday HeroesAuthor/Artist:
geminigrl11Rating: pg13
Length/Word Count: 2900
Warnings/Spoilers: Tornado damage discussed, no spoilers.
Summary: What is the measure of a man? Sometimes, it's found in the midst of epic struggle. Sometimes, it's in the spaces in between.
Reccer's Comments: This story actually spawned three other stories, and I'm reccing all of them. (I read kroki-refur's spin-off 'Blood and Ink' before this story, and I actually recommend doing the same.) Sam and Dean are heroes and good people because that is who they are, the fighting monsters is just one aspect. And they can't be fighting monsters all the time. Here's a story about those inbetween times.
Title:
Neither Bird Nor TreeAuthor/Artist:
july_july_julyRating: PG-13
Length/Word Count: 1360
Warnings/Spoilers: Spoilery for "No Rest for the Wicked"
Summary: It's not that Sam has stopped thinking. Quite the contrary.
Reccer's Comments: A dark, painful look at Sam's state of mind after Dean's death - but the quality of the writing is well worth enduring the hurt. A beautiful piece of work.
Reccer's Caveats: Dean's dead. But Kripke killed him.
