Title:
Kindred SpiritsAuthor/Artist:
scribblesininkRating: General
Length/Word Count: 3857
Warnings/Spoilers: up to Dream A Little Dream of Me, mild John whumpage
Summary: While on a job, John bumps into a fellow hunter. He soon learns they have more in common than mere knowledge of the supernatural.
Reccer's Comments: A really great take on how John first met Bobby. There's a lovely twist to exactly how they come to run into each other, and the story does an excellent job of showing the complexities of John's life as a hunter with two small children (wee!Dean and wee!Sam make an appearance), while it nicely weaves together a lot of small canon elements from throughout the series.
Reccer's Caveats: Partly from John's POV and partly from Bobby's. Slight mentions of canon relationships.
Title:
Her who loves you bestAuthor/Artist:
july-july-julyRating: PG13
Length/Word Count: somewhere between 3-5k
Warnings/Spoilers: John/Mary (sorta)
Summary: It should have come as no surprise that their first fight is a real ten round, knock-down, drag out, cage-match to the end.
Reccer's Comments: I cannot rec this enough. Loved that fic.
Title:
Prodigal SonAuthor:
dodger-winslowRating: PG-13
Word Count: 8,600
Warnings/Spoilers: Through the end of season 2 for Grey's Anatomy. Nothing specific for SPN.
Summary: When the call came, it hit John like a sucker punch from the blue. "John," the voice on the other end of the line said when he answered. "This is Denny Duquette. Your brother’s dead. He had a heart transplant, and it didn’t take. His body’s at Seattle Grace Hospital in Washington. I want you to go pick it up, sign for it, and send it home for burial. You don’t need to come with it. In fact, I’d prefer it if you didn’t."
Reccer's Comments: I normally avoid crossovers written on the basis of a shared actor, but Dodger draws some astonishing parallels between the family who raised John and the sons he raised himself. It's done with shattering thoroughness and I love it.
Reccer's Caveats: You don't have to know too much about Grey's Anatomy to read this, but it does help to be familiar with the Denny storyline.
Title:
FiftyAuthor/Artist:
ficwriter1966Rating: G
Length/Word Count: 1941
Summary: John turns fifty.
Reccer's Comments: By turns both funny and heartbreaking.
Title:
Last Man StandingAuthor/Artist:
scribblesininkRating: General
Length/Word Count: 1705
Summary: John had never before given thought to the idea he might outlive his sons.
Reccer's Comments: A great look at what John was doing when he went "missing" at the start of Season 1, and how he feels about his sons.
Title:
Code 'Winchester'Author/Artist:
bardicvoiceRating: Unrated but I'd say PG
Length/Word Count: 100
Warnings/Spoilers: None/IMToD
Summary: A drabble inspired by a military aviation code word
Reccer's Comments: One of the most powerful drabbles I've read. In just a few words the author captures John's thoughts, heart and soul at one of the most pivotal times in the Winchesters' lives.
Title:
Don't Send Me No More LettersAuthor/Artist:
kimonkey7Rating: PG-13
Length/Word Count: 2,000
Warnings/Spoilers: 1x20 and 1x21
Summary: He can only take so much, and have only so much taken from him.
Reccer's Comments: A thoughtful, heartaching look into John's perspective on losses.
Title:
A Father's LoveAuthor/Artist:
izazovRating: PG
Length/Word Count: 4400
Warnings/Spoilers: None that I can think of aside from general spoilers for season 4.
Summary: Even an angel can have a crisis of faith.
Reccer's Comments: An incredibly unique and original story with Castiel and John Winchester as the main characters. This is the author's take on why Castiel was chosen to raise Dean from Hell and it's fascinating. Her Castiel is wonderfully in character as is her John... where, even in heaven, he's still a stubborn, miserable, "my way or the highway" s.o.b. *g*
Reccer's Caveats: Little to no Sam and Dean in this (but it's okay, they're still the focal point of the story).
Title:
Hide and SeekAuthor/Artist:
ficwriter1966Rating: PG, for language
Length/Word Count:3373
Warnings/Spoilers: none
Summary: Two years and fifty-two days after it killed Mary, it came calling.
Reccer's Comments: A great take on John's mental state the early years after Mary's death.
Reccer's Caveats: Scary.
Title:
EpiphanyAuthor/Artist:
janissa11Rating: PG-13/R
Length/Word Count: short
Warnings/Spoilers: Rape (aftermath only), rough language, physical violence.
Summary: He will spend a lot of hours, later, coming up with reasons why he didn’t notice.
Reccer's Comments: Pretty!Dean and the tragic consequences...LOVE bad-ass!Papa!John.
Title:
Go Tell It on the MountainAuthor/Artist:
ficwriter1966Rating: PG, for language
Length/Word Count: 1667
Summary: John and the boys stuck in a cabin in the snow, sharing memories.
