Pre-Series Recs Part 4 (Yep, Here's S'More)

Aug 28, 2009 23:38

Title: Ten Going on Thirteen
Author/Artist: dodger_winslow
Rating: PG-13
Length/Word Count: about 5000?
Warnings/Spoilers: Violence, Language
Summary: For a ten year old, Dean really had the pain-in-the-ass part of being mature for his age down pat.
Reccer's Comments: A non-supernatural threat nearly takes out John and Dean grows up on the spot to handle it.
Reccer's Comments 2: Dean is having a bad day, which means that John's day is going really, really bad.
Reccer's Comments 3: This is one of the very first Supernatural fics I ever read, and it struck me in a very powerful way. I was just exploring the fandom and knew very little about these characters, and this story helped me on my way to falling desperately in love with them all. (And I'm totally gone, now.)
Reccer's Caveats: Heartbreaking in unexpected ways.

Title: Stay
Author/Artist: Dodger-Winslow
Rating: R
Length/Word Count: 31000, 4 chapters
Warnings/Spoilers: Violence, language, mature themes
Summary: When breakfast on the road takes a deadly turn, Dean is the only one who can save his father's life. He's ten, he's alone, and the only way he makes it is if she stays.
Reccer's Comments: This was the first weeChesters story that I've ever read and it just made me fall in love with the genre. The stry is mostly told from the waitress pov, which in itself, offers an unique view of John and his kids. It starts in "Ten Going on Thirteen".

Title: In This Moment
Author/Artist: geminigrl11
Rating: G
Length/Word Count: almost 2K
Warnings/Spoilers: pre-series (shortly after the Christmas flashback from a Very Supernatural Christmas)
Summary: Sam convinces John to participate in a Friday movie night
Reccer's Comments: Preseries fic often feels too cutesy for my taste, but this fic is delivered from John's POV so there's a toughness with the poignancy that makes it feel tangible and real.

Title: The Long and Narrow Rope
Author/Artist: Pdragon76
Rating: PG
Length/Word Count: 2 chapters
Warnings/Spoilers: sailor-mouths, tornadoes, horny toads
Summary: It’s been said that roots and wings are the only two lasting bequests you can give your kids, but sometimes all you’ve got is guns and how to use ‘em.
Reccer's Comments: Well, it's Pdragon, so that should cover it. But its also a very real and funny little view of John's struggle to raise 2 boys.

Title: The Teacher's Lounge Coffee Klatch
Author/Artist: dodger_winslow
Rating: R (for language)
Length/Word Count: 10 000?
Summary: "I didn’t start it," Dean said before John had even cleared the door to the principal’s office. The kid was wound up tighter than a clock. His expression was pure pissed off, and his shoulders were so tense he looked like somebody’d jerked him to a screeching halt in mid-smack down. Which, as far as John could tell, was exactly what someone had done.
Reccer's Comments: dodger_winslow is THE author to go for John fics, and this fic is an excellent example of why. I love how John had such confidence in Dean that he believed Dean's side of the story against a couple of teachers, and how he stood up for Dean when they tried to call Dean 'special'. And the John/Dean conversation at the end? Precious!

Title: The U.S.S. Enterprise
Author/Artist: marycontraire
Rating: G
Length/Word Count: not given, probably around 1000 words
Summary: John recognizes Dean.
Reccer's Comments: One of my favourite fics to come out of 4x03! The last line packs a punch too.

Title: I Must Not Tell Lies
Author/Artist: girlfan1979
Rating: R
Length/Word Count: 4100
Warnings/Spoilers: From the author: Violence, punishment that may be regarded as excessive or abusive by some persons and in some locales, though legal where it takes place. This story contains one portrayal of the Winchesters; to the best of the author’s knowledge, it is entirely plausible within canon; nonetheless, there will be some for whom the portrayal of John appears OOC in terms of one’s personal picture of the character. Readers with highly specific and fixed personal fanon regarding the character of John (in particular) should use caution in reading this piece. This is one John; it is not necessarily the author’s John, let alone anything more.
Summary: A character study of Sam and Dean, and some of the weaker links in the strong chain that binds them together. Set pre-series, mid autumn 1999 (Sam 16, Dean nearing 21).
Reccer's Comments: This is just heartbreaking. It's just so raw and sad. So sad. Definitely read the coda and sequel, too. The sequel, especially, is sort of needed to help.
Reccer's Caveats: This is not a nice John. Not a horrible John, but it's an uncomfortable sort of story.

Title: I'm The Saddest Ridin' Fool Alive
Author/Artist: buyo105
Rating: G
Length/Word Count: 1503
Summary: 4 Times John Winchester picked up a hitch-hiker, and 1 time he didn't
Reccer's Comments: Five brilliant pieces.

Title: Sweet Child O'Mine
Author/Artist: ErinRua
Rating: PG-13
Length/Word Count: 4000
Warnings/Spoilers: Language, physical violence.
Summary: Not every danger the Winchesters face is supernatural....
Reccer's Comments: First-person, great John-voice. Some humor to balance out the action and excitement. Nice to see positive John & Sam interaction.

Title: Sky Pilot
Author/Artist: i_speak_tongue
Rating: PG-13
Length/Word Count: 2092
Warnings/Spoilers: Violence, Language, disturbing images.
Summary: Dean's only 18. The same age as half the boys in John's platoon.
Reccer's Comments: A hunt-gone-wrong brings pain for both Dean & John. Good use of Pastor Jim. Read "No, This is Not Just a Really Bad Hangover" for Dean's side of things.
