What IS Gen? Or, How to Rec for This Community

The defining mission of this comm is GEN LOVE. It's right there in the url and everything. Mmmm, gen. We love gen. Gen gen gen! Give us some more, it's good stuff.

The difficulty in this is that the definition of what gen is differs from group to group and even from person to person. It's like a sliding Kinsey scale thing or something, and it's ( Read more... )

Hee. From now on I may refer to "does this story still qualify as gen if it has xyz in it" as The Line of Brrzap. *G*

This has been a really interesting discussion. There isn't really a definitive, one-size-fits-all answer, is there.

That sounds good to me.

Just one question, so I'm sure I fully get it: what is considered as explicit descriptions of sex or sexual actions? I have in mind some stories I wrote (not that I think they would be recced here,'cause they're in French, anyway). I consider myself as a gen writer, but in a few stories there is mild het action, nothing more than kissing and some making out, and for no longer than a few lines. Would such stories be okay?

A little bit of mild kissing is probably okay, as long as it doesn't go on for paragraphs or something. This is another thing that we'll trust to the reccer's discretion.

Thanks! I added a line to answer this question.

Sounds good! I think it's inclusive enough to make 99% of the folks happy. And the other 1% wouldn't be happy no matter what you did. :(

Awesome. I approve of this stance (mostly, and it's certainly a good meshing of different views while still privileging gen, which is the point of the comm), and I approve even more of the playful tone you're taking. *g*

I feel like my eyes have been opened to the world of fic categorization. :) I've never heard of a fic being defined as "Dean/Castiel pre-slash (but reads as gen to me, without them actually thinking about getting into each other's pants or doing anything about it)". To me that sounds superficially like canon with Dean and Castiel not thinking/acting romantically about/toward each other. Interesting...
