Hey, no problem. We're here to help. :)

There will be a different rec submission post every week. Here's the current one: posty

There is a text box with handy-dandy copypasta. To use it, just click in the box and hit ctrl-a on your keyboard to select everything, then ctrl-c to copy. Hit "leave a comment," the click in there and hit ctrl-v, and it's all right there. Then just fill in the information.

You have pretty much all we need here, but we want to hear your comments, too!

Thanks so much for reccing. You're a hero! ♥

ok my rec's have odd black slashes going all the way around them and I don't know why. On another note, anyway I can edit them? or you? The Children of Man one is a great fic of what if Cas temp looses his powers, and funny, plotty, and very gripping.

and the Colour one is a great hardcore Cas torture and Dean and Sam trying to find him story, very edge of the seat stuff. And I truely what to add those comments, do I have to re-post, again?

The slashes are because the comments are screened. I don't think you'll be able to edit them, so yeah, repost, please. :D Sorry this was such a hassle.

I think it's fine now. Just remember to use the provided format next time. :)

Thank you for reccing!

A quick question that occurred to me this morning - say a reccer has posted a story, you've given it the quick once over and figure everything's fine. But if a reader picks up something that might be a touchbutton (say, if an animal is killed, which is offensive to a lot of folks, but others might not worry about) - we can just give you the heads-up and you'll add that to the warnings?

I do think you'll have more situations like that, than something that's so blatantly out of place that people will storm the castle with torches ablaze. Bravo, again, for tackling this! I think it *will* be a great comm, once the bugs get ironed out.

Yes, that does sound reasonable. As the recent warnings wank has pointed out, people can be a lot more sensitive and have a lot more buttons than any of us really knew.

I don't know if I would go so far as to warn for EVERY little thing that could offend someone (that can get really, really petty), but at least any big things, like implied non-con, child abuse, animal abuse, suicide, self-harm, things like that.

The difference between "squick" and "trigger" is also important to remember in these cases. I don't know if you've come across any of this in fandom, but I can point the way to some interest essays, if you like.

Oh, of course - there's no way to warn for *everything*. I commented in another thread that there's always somebody who doesn't like [insert item of choice].

I hope all the discussion hasn't put you off too much, because I'm finding it really interesting, exploring people's viewpoints on the question of "What is gen?" Bottom line, though - I feel (and have always felt) that it's MY responsibility to tread cautiously when I choose something to read. I'm an adult, and nobody's holding me at gunpoint forcing me to read something I find uninteresting, or odd, or offensive. There's no reason you guys (the mods) should feel it's your responsibility to protect everyone, because you can't. We all have the freedom to hit the "back" button. You don't need to sit there and hit it for us.

Sure, if you have a moment to link to those essays you mentioned, that'd be great. :)

Not put off so much as...treading more cautiously now? I think that's it. I kind of jumped into this feet-first, assuming that my definition of gen was the same as everybody else's, and that turned out not to be the case. I've set my standards and I intend to abide by them, and I hope that that's enough for people.

Here's one amazing, heart-breaking essay about warnings and the need for them: Sexual Assault, Triggers, and Warnings. It is itself triggery, but I think it's important for everyone to read and understand.

maybe I'm hopeless but... I'm soo confused, where are the actual rec's? I kinda see mine in boxes but where are the others?

The rec post is for members to submit their recommendations. In a few days one of the mods will compile a list of the submissions and make it public in an entirely different post. You can only see your recs because we don't want to spoil you for the other fics. That way you might have something new to read too. :)

Rec format suggestion alphabet26 July 26 2009, 05:15:16 UTC
Hello,

I saw on the rec suggestion page that you said not to worry about coding because the mods would just have to redo it, which is true based on the text box you have set up. But if you made a text box within the text box, people who post the rec could do the coding to make it easier.

I would wind up posting this as my comment:

Which doesn't look at all pretty, I grant you. But then the mods just copy and paste and get this:

Rec Category: Fic
Title: A Story
Author/Artist: alphabet26
Rating: PG
Length/Word Count: 1000
Warnings/Spoilers: Nada
Summary: Nada
Reccer's Comments: Nada
Reccer's Caveats: Nada
Link to the Good Stuff: test

Which is clearly much easier on you, and since you're having to code 50+ recs could help you out.

By golly, you're right. That will make things MUCH easier for us. Thank you!
