Supernatural Un-Book Club: The Benders

Apr 01, 2008 20:28

As I was sitting down to write my review of The Benders, I got stuck.

I picked this episode because it is one of my favorites of Season 1.  It has everything a true Supernatural fan loves:  brotherly moments, great one-liners, aliases, creepy-ass monster of the week.  Plus, it's set in Hibbing, Minnesota and for this Minnesotan - that is just plain ( Read more... )

(Side note: Being a moderator is freaky. I just hit what I thought was the reply button, and I got to edit entry. Hey! I could edit the entry . . .)

Did you notice the southern accent this time?

I think all other coherent thoughts were lost when I saw handcuffs.

Wait, I think this was one of the clearest episodes where Kripke and Co. started exploring the whole humans as monsters thing. (Faith would be the first, I think.) This episode is the start of the demons as former humans thing of this season.

*places hand on heart and holds up right hand*

Scout's honor the hick English they are talking has a more hillybilly feel to it than Minnesotan. It always makes me laugh. I've been to Hibbing. I know how they talk up dere.

I've been to Hibbing as well, so I know what you are talking about. LOL!

I'll have to go back and watch and really listen for the accent!

Allo Ocean

I like what you did. Good job. So not much to add. Nice how you ended it with a picture of the boys walking together. It made me think this is what I love about this show, the boys talking together, just simply enjoying each other's compagny, without saying it of course. No chick flick !!

If I'm not mistaken, this is the first time Sam goes and disappears on Dean. And as with the other times Sam's been missing, Dean first reaction is panic. Of course, he gets his wits back real fast and does everything to get Sam back. But to me this episode sets the ground rules about Dean reaction to a missing Sam. And we see those actions and/or reactions every time Sam disappears, again and again and again....

Oh and pictures in the blog itself.. Nice.
I have one question for you. What are you trying to do, raise everyone expectations... I have to do one in a few week. Getting nervous and intimidated, you guys all did great blog. You'll all be hard to follow. :-x

Hey Frenchie!

Thanks! While I was working on this, the one thing I knew was that I wanted to end with the boys walking. Just because that scene sticks out so much to me.

But to me this episode sets the ground rules about Dean reaction to a missing Sam

Excellent point! I hadn't thought of it like that, but you're right - Dean panics first and then he settles down and figures out where Sam could have gone. I'm so like Dean. :D

Aww...thanks!!! I was super worried after Panns awesome blog, so I'm glad that you think I did a good job. I think you will do an awesome job - I can't wait to read your review!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Handcuffs! FTW!!!!!!! *giggle*

This is a great episode & Pa Bender creeped me right the hell out. *thumbs up, dude*

Scuzzy camper with a bad fanbelt! Jar fulla teeth = EWWWWWW! That green cooler that we see magically show up later in Fresh Blood! Fire poker to the shoulder!

I like Kathleen. She could come back for another episode.

One of my fave (non-snark) Dean quotes from this episode: Look, here’s the thing. When we were young, I pretty much pulled him from a fire. And ever since then, I’ve felt responsible for him. Like it’s my job to keep him safe. I’m just afraid if we don’t find him fast. Please. He’s my family.

*giggles too* I just had to use that.

I love that quote - it was one that I had written down, but then I didn't include it because I had so many...

You really made me think, Ocean! Nice work! I love the pictures. My favorite cap of this episode is Dean trying to get the antenna to pick the cuffs and he's biting his lip! *explodes* My sister has a shirt that says "Demons I get, People are crazy." and she wears it when people make her insane.

OMG - I was debating if I should use that cap or the one I used. I ended up going with this one because I said handcuffs and thought I should show them better...

That's awesome.

Good job Ocean! This is one of my all time favorite episodes. And, as a bonus, it's the one that got my husband hooked into the show. Plus it's got Sammy in a cage (what? it's not weird to get a thrill out of that, right?). I love the look that Sam and Dean give each other when Dean first shows up to the rescue. You can just see the relief and the love and the holy shit you scared the crap out of me in just those few seconds of eye contact between them. *sigh*

Sarie, Sam-in-a-cage!!! Hee hee!

Ooooh...I just thought of something. Color me nutty, but I think the scene in TKaAR where Dean finds Ben in a cage makes for a neat callback to Dean finding Sam in the cage here. Although, it's definitely a much bigger cage!!

I think you are exactly right about that, Rap! As I was rewatching, I was waiting for Dean and Sam to touch fingers through the cage, ala Dean and Ben. Then I realized what that would have sparked, so, needless to say, I'm glad that didn't happen.

I'm surprised to hear that this is your favorite and also the one that got your husband hooked. It's been one of my favorites, but it seems as though people usually pick a heavy-mythology episode as their favorite...

Sammy in a cage...yum.

*sighs too*
