FAQ:
Q: What exactly is the challange?
A: As avid fic readers and history nerds, we noticed there was a lack in SPN period pieces. Despite this fact, there was always one in every big bang community we searched. We want to help fix that. You can write any fic as long as you stick to two rules.
One, the story must be set in a time period other than the present. To ensure this, you cannot write past the early 90s. With that being said, we want to make this bang as accessible to you as possible. So, we are allowing you to write time travel and the distant future (think along the lines of the 3000s).
Two, stay as historically as accurate as possible. There is nothing more disheartening than reading the term ‘awesome’ in a fic set during the dark ages.
Q: What pairings can I use? Can I write gen?
A: The challenge is open to all pairings. Wincest, Destiel, Sassy-you could even write Ellen/Mary if that that’s what you want. RPS, gen, threesomes and het are allowed as well.
Q: Am I restricted to writing an AU?
A: You can technically write a canon based fic. Considering the numerous time traveling episodes, you can place it within that realm. However, the majority of the fic needs to be set in a different era. We would highly suggest there be a focus on the characters fitting into the time frame to make it work. We ask that you stay as historically correct as possible.
Q: What is the minimum word count?
A: We have two different options you can choose from. There is the mini-bang with a 10k minimum and the big bang with a 20k minimum.
Q: Can my fic be a crossover?
A: No. We want the fics to be specific to the SPN fandom. However, if you are writing an RPS, you can include actors from other shows-Sophia Bush, Chad Michael Murray, Alexis Bledel, etc…
Q: If I'm writing an RPS, can my fic have pairings outside SPN?
A: Yes and no. For example, you could have a previous/current relationship of Jensen/Chad Michael Murray but it must change to Jensen/Jared by the end of the story.
Q: Can I co-write a fic with a friend?
A: Yes, of course.
Q: Does my fic have to be beta'd to be submitted?
A: Yes. We will not accept unbeta'd fics to be posted. If you do not already have a beta, there will be post where you can request a beta or volunteer to be one.
Q: Am I allowed to write more than one fic? Am I allowed to create art for more than one fic?
A: Writers are allowed to do one fic. However, artists could claim two fics.
Q: How many pieces do I have to make? Can I only make a certain type?
A: You must do a minimum of one piece if you claimed a mini-bang, and a minimum of two pieces if you claimed a big bang. You are welcome to make as many as you want. You must make a digital/traditional art, a manip or a fanvid for your required pieces. Additional pieces can be podfics, mixes, icons, etc…
Q: Is there a size requirement?
A: We would prefer artwork/manips to be at least 500x500px. Fanvids must be at least 1 minute and 30 seconds long.
Q: I'm not going to be able to finish my fic / art in time, what do I do?
A: Please notify us immediately. You will be dropped from the challenge and a pinch hitter will be assigned.
Q: Can I sign up as a writer and an artist?
A: Writers cannot sign up to be a main artist, but they can be a pinch-hit artist. We will be holding second art claims, so if a writer is confident that they are able to get both their story and art done by their posting dates then they're free to claim then too. We understand that life can get hectic, and don't want to have people bite off more than they can chew, and leave someone without art.
Q: How do I turn in rough/final drafts?
A: They will be emailed to us as an attachment. We will go over the specific details when the time comes.
