Question about 6.11 *spoiler*

I really want to know why people are excited about Dean becoming a reaper. I don't have any particular feelings about it either way except perhaps confusion. So for all those that love this idea, can you please tell me why you like it??

This is just me. I'm not so much thrilled about reaper!Dean as about more interaction between Dean and Death; I loved Death and I thought he and Dean had amazing chemistry.

Same as the anon above me, but I also really love the idea of Dean becoming Death -- of normal people, of taking people away from their families, because Dean's reaction to death in 2x01 was just. awful. "How do you think ghosts are made?"
And the fact that he already thinks of himself as a killer, and then, because this is SPN and like Buffy, you can just go literal like that and have it still make sense in the world of the show, he actually works for Death? Reaps good people? Auuuugh. The angst will be delicious.

I'm excited if they do it well. Dean has always represented humanity on the show for me, so seeing him deal with being something non-human, if only for 24 hours, has a lot of interesting implications that they could explore.

We've already had vampire!Dean, though. I mean, don't get me wrong - I'm thrilled at the concept of Reaper!Dean - but Dean isn't a completely untouched representative of mankind anymore.

True (and I absolutely loved vampire!Dean \o/) but this is a little different. He couldn't control becoming a vampire, but he'll actually choose to become a reaper, and he'll have ~powers~ that he'll have to consciously use to kill people. Seeing as how he still retained enough humanity not to kill anything as a vampire, I'm looking forward to seeing how he'll deal with actually having to kill people. It's less animal-like, and more...creepy supernatural-like. IDK, I just think it could be awesome.

As someone who has been into powers!Dean for quite some time now (and by "into" I might should specify "have devoured the concept ravenously for years, up to and including straining to find every single glimmer of potential subtext that could be used to build up a case for powers!Dean headcanon") I am quite pleased about it as well!
Reaper!Dean sooths me just as spirit!Dean does. I like both much better than vampire!Dean. I'm the nonnie who wrote the longwinded spiel about Dean and Death a few comments below, so Dean being a spirit or a Reaper fits my interests much more than Dean being somehow outside of life and death.
You're right, too. Reapers don't seem at all animalistic. They've got a job to do, but they're not driven by cravings.

As one of the (if not meme's biggest) Reaper!Dean & Dean/Tessa fans, I'll try to come up with an answer for you that makes sense under my massive amount of squee.
Basically, for me, it's because Dean's danced with death since S1. Dean and Death as a theme is one I love exploring. Dean has been dead, near death, died and resurrected so many times. He's been dead longer than he's been alive. He was willing to sacrifice his own life in Faith, was suicidal in S2 and the first part of S3, and has been haunted by what he'd done while dead ever since. Then we see him in spirit form in 4x15 and it just gets even more interesting, seeing how quickly he picked up on using those ghost powers. And he had the ability to see through the Veil back in the S3 finale

"Death is your art. You make it with your hands, day after day. That final gasp. That look of peace. Part of you is desperate to know, what's it like? Where does it lead you? And now you see, that's the secret. Not the punch you didn't throw or the kicks you didn't land. Every Slayer... has a death wish. Even you."
Spike said it to Buffy, but it might as well be said to Dean. He's been dancing with Death a long time, it's fitting that he become Death for a little while.
Dean's had a very real death wish for a long time, too. Since IMToD, in fact. So him becoming Death has...a certain symmetry to it.

Since Faith, I'd argue. And that's probably just the first time he was conscious of it. He was throwing himself into suicidal situations long before that.
Also, are you the nonnie I was squeeing with over Spike and his duster in the other post? If so, glad to see you here!! And man, so agreed about Dean and his death wish.
