If THOSE are their awesome moments of support, surely they're trolling or at least have their sarcasm set to high?

I do think there are some homophobic attitudes in this show, just, you know, average male-dominated crew level of homophobia.

But the point with most of the LGBT rights-concerned Tumblr fans is that they actually eat with a spoon the problematic parts of the show if they benefit their ship. Like those typical lolgay moments, or the stereotyping of homosexuality/bisexuality, it's all good because they think those are hints at D/C (and yeah, it's always or practicaly always D/Cers doing this, I don't see Wincesters or Sassy fans or, dunno, Dean/Crowley fans with this attitude). So, while I'm sure a few of them are actually trying to help the LGBT cause, I have no doubt the vast majority are just slash fans that want their ship to be canon because it makes their hearts (and other body parts) ~flutter.

The above is also a D/Cer, by the way.

Number 5 and 6 seem like a reach to me. Victim of the Week dies on Supernatural: news at 11.

The outrage at 8 is quite forced as well (if anything, the flag inclusion is simply neutral) and finally, it seems 9 is only ok because it's preachy enough.

And the 'queer bating' accusations just makes me roll eyes, at this point.

Oh thank God, the apologists are here. This discussion is never complete until some twit waves their total failure to even grasp the issues in everyone's face.

Ooooh... "the issues"!

People have no idea how insufferable they sound.

I also think mekbuda is going out of their way to find fault. I do agree in general that the show is not some beacon of LGBT-friendly light sent down from the heavens and is quite often problematic, but some of these examples seem like stretching.

In addition to the ones you pointed out, I think Cas' "I am totally indifferent to sexual orientation" was not at all offensive. Inserted for laughs, I agree, but I don't think that's enough to make it offensive in this case. mekbuda's reasoning was "oh well thank fuck I’m so grateful that as a gay person I’m not actively hated", but... I don't really see how that makes this offensive. Can someone explain that to me?

And then looking through her bullet points at the end, I'm a little confused: Who was the trans* character on the show? And the depraved bisexuals?

The link isn't working for me because my phone is misbehaving, but did she actually say a trans character? Because I can't think of a trans character, but off the top off my head I can think of at least two times when transgender references were made as jokes, one of which was the subject of blatant ewwwww tmi!! (You Can't Handle the Truth, the convo between Dean and Bobby).

The depraved bisexual would probably be referring to the vampire episode.

Their exact words were, "the one trans* character is treated like pure shit". I think the nonnie below is right: they must be talking about Raphael.

Ahh, okay, I can see the depraved bisexual there. Although mekbuda's exact words are "Depraved Bisexual is a trope used to a massive extent", so I feel like there must be more to warrant that strong a statement.

Yeah, my honest impression is that bisexual representation on SPN is practically nil. Of course, that's why examples of them using that trope during the rare times that a bisexual character is actually featured is so disappointing.

I wonder if she would characterize many of the demons as bisexual? While I wouldn't necessarily agree with that, I can see how, for the average viewer who doesn't put much thought into either the SPN universe or sexuality, the demons would seem like the evil bisexuals who'll seduce anyone to further their evil ways.

ayrt (and I forgot to put ayrt in my last comment, sorry)

Very much agreed. I was struggling to come with any bisexuals, though tbh it's not something I typically spend a whole lot of time thinking about because I am straight.

Regarding the demons: Hmmm, could be. Not an interpretation that would have jumped out at me, but I guess I can see where that could come from.

Wait, there was another thing in the S8 finale, Castiel making a crack that was something like "I don't think that woman was really a woman" or whatever. She was an offscreen character, but it contributes to an overall climate that isn't exactly welcoming.
