Fic in other fandoms anonymous July 20 2012, 01:40:19 UTC
So I've been trying out a few other fandoms, in case the most dire spoiler predictions come true and I need to ~flounce~ from SPN (don't worry, nonnies, you'll all get engraved invitations to my flouncing party if I do!) but I'm finding it a bit unsatisfying.

There's some really good Sherlock fic out there, but a lot of other places I'm finding the writing is not to my taste, except for where the SPN writers I already like are writing other fandoms. I really want to ship Bruce/Tony, for instance, but the fic isn't quite cutting it. One is not "bedecked" in a Black Sabbath tshirt & jeans, you just wear those fuckers.

Conversely, I've read a lot of Merlin fic, even though the show is not very good, because there seems to be a lot of great stuff written there.

Do you find there are differences in style and quality level of fic in different fandoms, meme?

I do think quality varies by fandom. I've gone looking for canon-pairing Gilmore Girls fic on ff.net and AO3 both, and it is all BAD. I've asked my flist, and everyone recs me the same 2-3 good authors - which are great, but they are only 2-3 authors!

But then GG fandom isn't (wasn't?) very big. I think monster fandoms are likelier to attract at least a few really good authors. Ditto monster ships. I could rec you some Bruce/Natasha, if that would help?

LOLOL.

AYRT - Hit me with your Bruce/Natasha recs, nonnie! That sounds yummy.

I actually haven't read a ton in this fandom, but what Bruce/Natasha I've read, I've liked.

Starts out Bruce/Natasha, picks up lots of other pairings later. This author is consistently excellent.

Again, primarily Bruce/Natasha but with lots of side pairings:

NA. Nonnie, could I please get the names of those 2-3 GG authors? I have also been searching for some good fic.

the only other fandom that's satisfied me fic-wise is Inception...but the thing with that is the fandom has waned a lot since it's heyday. I wasn't that involved when it first came out so I'm still able to find a fic or two that I haven't read whenever I go looking.

I just can't get into avengers fic idk why :/

Oh, Inception. That was an incredible fandom to be involved with right around the release of the movie. I lost interest after a few months though and haven't been back since. That right there is why I try not to get involved with movie fandoms, though - even the best become quiet after a while. It's just how it goes with closed canon.

I would like to know if daily/weekly/whatever newsletters have died off or something, cause they were useful as hell, and either I can't find them or they don't exist anymore? Where are the fandom newsletters?

In SPN, or other fandoms?

This is the daily SPN newsletter - http://spnnewsletter.livejournal.com/

There's a weekly S/D newsletter here -
http://samdean-otp.livejournal.com/tag/*%20otp%20recap

I think there's a D/C one too, but I don't follow it - maybe someone has a link?

Sherlock has one too -

Sorry, I meant in other fandoms, cause that'd make it easier to see where the action is in those fandoms. SPN thankfully has a few of them, which is how I keep up with the fanfiction. I just don't have the time or patience to trawl through fic journals..

AYRT - ah, makes sense. Well, there's the Holmes one, hopefully that's of some interest :)

I wonder if there's a list of them somewhere, like that comm which lists ALL THE BANGS.

Have you checked the list of newsletters at Fanlore?

http://fanlore.org/wiki/List_of_Newsletter_Communities

I don't know how up-to-date it is, but you can always try and see if there are some for the fandoms you're interested in and if they're active or not.
