Fandom population poll

Do you feel like the fandom has lost a significant amount of people due to flouncing/new fandoms (such as Sherlock)? Or do you think people who complain about that are overreacting?

Maybe it's because I'm one of the new people, but I've seen a lot of people new to SPN fandom lately. Maybe the newbies are just not the types of fans everyone was hoping for.

I feel the same way. We still have a lot of good writers and good output, but either people are losing their ability to leave comments or there just aren't as many readers as there used to be. I sense a real decline in interest, at least here on LJ.

DA
I've noticed this too. :( Quality stories get much less feedback than they did just a year ago. I'm routinely shocked when I reach the end of a good fic and see the comment numbers. I hope that doesn't drive the good writers we still have into the arms of more appreciative fandoms.

Comments are hard to peg. I never know how many I'll get. I got as many for a short gen thing I wrote for spn_las as I did for a pretty decent (imho, of course) J2 porn fic recently. If there's a pattern, I can't figure it out.

This is a vague impression -- I've noticed maybe four or five people on my not-too-huge flist drifting towards Sherlock and other stuff. Some still dabble in Spn, just less frequently, others are fandom monogamists. But none of them dramatically flounced, and I know of several people like me who joined the fandom within the past year. And after a dry spell just before and just after the start of the season, I'm seeing quite a bit of new fic.

I know several people, myself included, whose participation in SPN has waned a bit with the explosion of Sherlock fandom. But we are still here! I actually think that there are a large number of new people coming into SPN fandom as well, the latecomers and Cas fans, and I think that their shiny new fandom perspectives tends to scare off some of us old-timers, as well. But that's a discussion for a different thread, I think...

I don't think we've lost more people to Sherlock than we did to Inception, or Merlin, or (reaching really far back) bandom. There's always a fandom-of-the-moment; once upon a time SPN was the shiny new thing that everyone was jumping on.
It seems likely that S6 will pull in some new Cas-fans and Evil!Sam fans.

I have nothing like a statistical sample, and I don't know D/C fic at all, but in my corner I am seeing fewer comments on classic wincest, especially the kind that is eternally set in Early Season Land (not judging, I am pretty fond of Early Season Land myself), and more comments on stuff more related to recent canon. For me personally, Sam-centric Gen used to garner me the fewest comments, and now it is pulling even with wincest and Dean-centric Gen. Love the Sam plot or hate it, it does have a lot of people interested.

Really? That's interesting! I feel like one of the most-recced wincest authors I've seen in this last year is candle_beck, and all of her stuff is that kind of classic early season wincest. It seems almost pointless to write current season Sam fic, since it will undoubtedly be Jossed within a week or two.

lol SPN is my new Buffy. I will probably go down with the ship. I'm not currently happy with the show, but then Btvs made me miserable often too. I don't know if SPN has the same staying power as that fandom though.

I think a lot of people have that never-say-die relationship with SPN. Something about it really gets under your skin. I can't imagine just being like, "Bored now, bye!" after spending so long obsessed with the Winchester saga.

NA - I was thinking this too! I watch/read a lot of stuff, but I don's fangirl much at all. But SPN I do, and probably will til the end. What is it about Show?

And I don't think we've gotten enough new people to make up for the ones that have left. If we have, they're on Tumblr, Facebook, or Twitter; not LJ.
