This was...okay. I liked the idea, but the execution wasn't quite there. The mechanics were fine, but I never really felt the flat, changeless atmosphere that I thought the author was going for, to the extent that every time she dropped a reminder about it I actually was reminded instead of feeling it all along.
I did like the interaction between Jimmy and Sam, their discussions and their relationship. Sadly, the romance was handled kind of awkwardly. Despite the believability of their growing friendship/relationship and the sexual tension, the moment when they went for it fell kind of flat for me.
The plot also suffered from a lack of execution. There were some interesting elements in it, but some parts weren't explained well and others were rushed. There was also a deux ex machina aspect to the last part of the story that badly undercut the previous leisurely reveal. That was the worst part of the story, to be honest, and if you're leery about reading the story I've discussed the ending at more spoilery length below to help you decide.
Overall, I'd give it a C. Not bad, but falling short of what it could have been. If you like the idea of Jimmy/Sam, give it a try, just don't expect perfection.
SPOILERS!!!
Okay. When I said "deux ex machina," I wasn't kidding. Up until the last quarter of the story, things were moving on at a nice relaxed pace. Then, suddenly, everything's an Evil Plot, Jimmy's God's vessel, rocks fall, and... POOF! Reset button.
No, really. Sam finds himself back somewhere in Season 6/7 and none of what he and Jimmy just went through in 2014 happened, except to him. Cas is dead and his vessel destroyed, so Jimmy's not around, either. He misses Jimmy terribly, though, and eventually Jimmy shows up via more deux ex machina. And they live happily ever after (with Jimmy paying a couple of sentences lip service to his marriage by saying he'd rather be with Sam than cause Amelia and Claire more pain).
So. Yeah. I really did enjoy most of the first part of the story, but the last part just left me with my WTF?! face. It felt very rushed and pasteded on yay, and maybe the author just ran out of time. I would still say that reading the first part was worth the fall-off of the ending for me, but if it sounds too unbalanced for you to enjoy, then I wouldn't risk it.
