D/C SA Week 2: 9/27 - 10/3 anonymous October 19 2010, 14:13:24 UTC
Remembrance (for kandkl) , PG-13 http://community.livejournal.com/deancas tiel/2344525.html
prompt: Castiel is almost human, very near to falling, but he protects Dean during a hunt anyway, like an instinct, and he gets injured. Dean is pissed and tells him he can't just go doing that anymore. Classic H/C.

Side by Side, We Go (for anoradh) PG-13 http://community.livejournal.com/deancas tiel/2345224.html
elements of two prompts: 1. Dean has been thinking about Cas and 2. Castiel thinks Dean is happy with Lisa. Also thank you to recipient for allowing me to go AU

Out of Our Nightminds (And Into the Light) (for chellefic), PG-13 http://community.livejournal.com/deancas tiel/2347077.html

I have a feeling that I Cleanse the Mirror is prob going to be one of the best fics to come out of this fest. Any guesses about the author? I think it might be takadainmate but I'm seeing a lot of authors I don't know receiving fics so I could be completely wrong.

Seconding that I Cleanse the Mirror was probably the best fic so far, and also I think The Joy Is in the Process was very good, too, except the epilogue was just too much for me. I dunno why, exactly, it was just a little too pat about giving me a happy ending and actually detracted, for me, from the sweetness of the rest of the fic.

Reading I Cleanse The Mirror makes me feel so bad for what I wrote. I thought it was ok before, but now I'm certain it's just plain pathetic compared to that.

So, yeah, I Cleanse The Mirror is quite good just like the sun is quite shiny.

I liked Top 40 Nightmare except for the epilogue, because I can't picture Dean Winchester going into therapy.

I also never watched Buffy-- I think there was some episode where they all sang?-- so I'm probably missing some nuances in the story.

The fic made me smile, anyway. I thought it was sweet.

I concur with the previous nonnie that Top 40 Nightmare was fine except the epilogue. Dean voluntarily in therapy was just too much for me ( ... )

na

agreed re: the two POVs. And Cas himself kind of felt like a sidenote to the whole story, which was a little weird for a Dean/Cas fic. There were some great lines, though, and I enjoyed it.

Set me on fire was surprisingly hot-I usually don't go for phone sex. It was pretty straightforward, though.

Ignoring the epilogue for Top 40 Nightmare, otherwise it was a decent fic.

Tried to get into In Dreams-I like the prompts, but didn't quite make it.

Surrender

Daaaaaaang, the superficial punctuation mistakes and rapidly shifting POVs are throwing me out, which is a pity, because the writing's pretty interesting and I like the prompts.

Okay, I stuck with it to the end of the first scene, but now I'm out. Castiel feels really off, so this isn't for me.

Salvation is Free

Spoilers!

I really wanted to like Salvation is Free, because I've got a HUGE Priest!kink, but this one misses it by a mile. Cas is a priest and an angel, with no explanation. There's a ~connection, but no hint of romantic intentions, and all the angst is on Dean's side-on whether or not he deserves to be saved.

I was hoping for Cas!angst about his attraction to a horrible, horrible hit man. Possibly with an extra crisis in faith. Dean's angst would be third.

The writing is mediocre-the dialogue was a little stilted, and multiple references to Dean as 'the younger man'. But nothing too horrible. Just really not what I was hoping for.

Oh shucks, this one was on my to-read list because of the priest thing, despite the PG rating and pre-slash label.

What threw me were the random The Hunter references strewn about. Dean, afaik, isn't a hunter in this verse, but a hitman.

I really wanted to like it to, because hey, PRIESTS! But :-/

Well, I know I'm going to be in a minority on this, but the Sam characterization in Sam is a Genius really didn't work for me. I completely buy Sam thinking he's smarter than Dean and Castiel and the way that it's used here (where Sam turns out to be wrong). But the extreme level to which Sam takes it in his thoughts in this story, plus the insistence on expressing it in mathematical terms, really grated. The math especially really baffled me because since when is Sam particularly fond of math? The characterization wasn't silly enough in its OTTness, for me, to have me laughing at Sam from the beginning. Instead, I got annoyed - a little bit at Sam, but a lot bit at the author.

I'm of two minds regarding the math thing. On the one hand, OMG Maths! Using it as metaphor - loved that!

On the other, yes, Sam. Characterisation-wise it didn't ring true.

Though I still like it. *g*

Are you me, Nonnie? You've said everything that I was thinking while reading this fic, only in a far clearer way than I likely would have.

The math especially really baffled me because since when is Sam particularly fond of math? This part is what bothered me especially. Sam wanted to be a lawyer, not a mathematician, so shouldn't this fic have been peppered with, say, legal terms?

I think I'm going to call this one having been written by one of the fandom's former Stargate Atlantis writers. Because all of the math really puts me in mind of a Rodney/John story.
