Five Times an Author Went Away (but wasn't forgotten)

Sep 21, 2011 16:19

Supernatural continues to grow with new fans every day, while others fade gracefully into our legacy, like favorite, dog-eared pages from John's journal. Some of the authors below are still kicking around LJ, but all of them wrote their last SPN story well over a year or more ago, which means they may have gone undiscovered by some of you whippersnappers amongst all of the wonderful active writers we have today. Even if you're a senior citizen around these parts I think you'll enjoy revisiting the old days.

Each of these authors has a large catalogue of SPN fiction you can explore once you find something you like, and, trust me, you will! Please don't forget to leave a kind word...nothing makes an author's day like a new comment on an old story.

There's a bit of everything below...het, Wincest, gen, wee!chesters, and also death-fic, so mind the descriptions.

This is one of those stories where you know there's backstory that the author isn't giving you, but it's so skillfully written, with just enough hints woven in, that it adds to rather than detracts from the story. It's Jo's voice talking to us, and I love how she's portrayed here. The Sam/Jo/Dean is not just believable, but so well-constructed that it would have felt like it was missing if it hadn't been there.

Okay, see, here's the thing. I don't DO deathfic. Seriously. I don't. But this AU re-working of a canon death is so powerful, so stunningly perfect, I can't NOT tell you about it. It's one of those stories that I swear would have won an Emmy for writing had it been an actual episode. I just re-read it while putting this list together and it's still with me. Please read...

Jaws of Life.

This author's sly, understated style of humor never fails to crack me the hell up, and in particular I love the way she writes John with his young boys. If you're a fan of John this author is for you. Her wee!chesters are cute and funny without being syrupy sweet. In other words, they're actual boys. This is my all-time favorite of hers.

This author has more famous stories, (and full disclosure: I beta'd several, including this one) but this hot desert porn is one of my favorites of hers. Every fandom needs a good blow-job-in-the-car story, and when you have boys who look like Sam&Dean and a car that looks like the Impala, what's not to love? If you've ever driven through the American desert, you'll be transported back. If you haven't, well, you won't need to after reading this.

I often tell people that back when I stumbled onto SPN at LJ (without ever having watched an episode) this is THE story that made me want to be in this fandom. I just wanted to be in the vicinity of writers this good. Thinking of newer fans who may not ever read this makes me want to weep with loss on their behalf. This gen story puts us in Dean's head during Sam's Stanford years. Not only is Dean fantastic, but he's smart!Dean, and I know that my fellow smart!Dean fans will race to the story having heard that.
