A Song For a Story

Real life has been insane and honestly, I almost forgot that it was my week to rec here. Thanks to stress, I’ve been doing what I always do to cope: read fic and listen to music. When I realized I needed to come up with a theme for this week, I had a momentary panic attack. Usually I have a couple themes in the works but this time around, I simply couldn’t find my half-finished lists.

But then I came up with this.

When I write, I tend to have a soundtrack playing in my head. I love it when authors put together a soundtrack to go along with their fic. It’s great when you can tell a lot of thought went into the song selection, each song holding special meaning when combined with the fic. The song can go with a specific scene, a certain character, or maybe just fits the overall feel of the fic. Whatever the reason, the music just adds to the story for me.

So here are a couple of my favorite fics that have soundtracks. I can’t guarantee all of the soundtracks are still available for download but if not, at least you have a track listing.

Be sure to read the fics before checking out the soundtracks. Wouldn't want you to be spoiled!

He wakes up half-blind, not able to remember anything. Then Dean Winchester shows up to complicate things.

The fic is brilliant but the soundtrack is even more so. I love that each song clearly has a place where it fits in the story. It's almost as if the music is another layer, adding to the emotion of the plot.

Sam is the physical embodiment of everything Dean has ever done right in his entire life.

Part of last year's spn_j2_bigbang challenge, this story is one of my favorites. Set post-Heart, I just love the build up and the emotions threaded through the words. The soundtrack fits the story so well.

A Look From You and I Would Fall From Grace by nu_breed [ Soundtrack]
Tuesday in Broward County sucked beyond the telling of it, but Wednesday is a thousand times worse and Sam isn't waking up to find his brother alive, not this time. The Trickster's out there, and there are people who need him, but Sam's hell-bent on a path of self-destruction and desperate to hold onto Dean in every way he possibly can. Even if it means sacrificing himself in the process.

Written for this year's spn_j2_bigbang, this one actually hurts a bit. It's dark and painful, because let's face it, Sam was not in a good place. But it's completely amazing and raw and the music just works.

Almost At Home by balefully [ Soundtrack] (Soundtrack by dark_reaction)
Sam graduates from high school in early June in rural Tennessee. He and Dean start the summer with an all-nighter of celebration; the day after, while both fight hangovers, John calls to assign them their first hunt by themselves. They go to northern Virginia to investigate the homicidal ghost of a dangerous escapee of a high-security prison and mental institution whose MO is beheading people with an axe while wearing a filthy, grotesque bunny suit. Then throughout the long, happy summer, as they move around tackling a series of minor hunts together, John's absences grow longer. Sam and Dean explore their relationship as it burgeons into something they've both been craving and which neither of them regrets.

Another spn_j2_bigbang fic. This one has such a slow, beautiful build-up with a bittersweet undertone.

So these are a few soundtracks I love. What are yours?
