Back when the family business was still a 3-person operation, how likely is it that John -- skilled hunter, master of pattern recognition, able to read body language as easily as he would a Lucky Charms box -- would fail to see the nookie going on between his boys? Not bloody likely. I've been fascinated by the various ways in which John might react to discovering Sam and Dean's physical relationship. Would he disown them on the spot? Assault one or both of his sons? Go to extreme measures to separate them? Say Fuck it and join the party? Here are some fics with answers. Most were written several years ago, but John's been dead awhile (RIP), so it's not surprising that this theme doesn't get much play these days. And every fic is new to someone who hasn't read it yet.
Second Glance by ygrawn (R, Sam/Dean, John, 4600 words)
John is only ever a second glance to his boys, who see each other first, always first, with little room at the edges of their vision for anybody else.
Reccer's note: John maintains plausible deniability by never actually catching the boys at anything, though he sees the unmistakeable flirting and hears the even more unmistakeable headboard banging. Spans time from Sam's adolescence to shortly after his return from Stanford. The writing is breathless and subtle, and the heat radiating off of the boys is delicious. John's POV.
For the End of my Broken Heart by wicked truth (purged); fragmented whole (NC-17, Sam/Dean, John, 20K+ words)
Dad's disappeared and Sam's left to pick up the pieces of his broken brother.
Reccer's note: Takes place after the S. 1 finale, Devil's Trap, but in this story John has not traded his life for Dean's. At an emotionally-stressed time the boys turn to each other and realize that they are in love. John's taken off again and they are free to enjoy their relationship ... until John returns. The boys' love for each other is so strong in this story, and there's lots of good sex.
Milestones by locknkey (NC-17, Sam/Dean, John, 43734 words) This is the culmination of the highly-recommended
spell&wish!'verse.
Sam and Dean accidentally bonded at a young age, which triggered and enhanced their psychic abilities. Now, Sam is off to Stanford and Dean is accepted at the nearby UC Berkeley. It should be wonderful, everything they've worked for, but when the bond you share with your brother is a matter of life and death nothing is ever easy. Changing circumstances force Sam and Dean to adjust to a whole new life. When Sam discovers a mystery on campus that is quickly escalating to a personal threat, more complications ensue. They are faced with re-evaluating the roles they play as brothers, boyfriends, hunters and students.
Reccer's note: What John knows in this fic is that his bonded sons don't just have a strong emotional connection; they can actually communicate thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations to one another telepathically. And they can heal each other from almost any injury. He suspects that they are sexually involved but chooses not look too closely into it. John is not an unsympathetic character here, merely a father who wants his children to have the chance to broaden their horizons.
In the Beached Margins of the Sea by rivers_bend (NC-17, Sam/Dean, John, brief Pastor Jim, 20,500 words)
Sam and Dean black out on a hunt, and when they wake up, Dean's having visions and Sam can't get new, strange feelings out of his head. When John finds out about the side effects, he'll do anything to get rid of the "curse". But Sam and Dean don't want to go back to the way things were before.
Reccer's note: Wow, just wow. I love this story to bits. The boys are bonded, and John catches them in a sexual situation. He tries to separate them, but their bond, and their love, is unbreakable. Beautifully written, perfectly paced, and the love just oozes off the page.
