Prologue

“Dean, can you just tell me what is going on?” Sam pleaded into the phone pacing back and forth across the floor of the motel room he shared with his brother. The same brother that had been acting weird ever since they had arrived in Metropolis, Kansas.

“Chill Sammy, it’s nothing. I’m handling it okay; just see what you can find out about the case. I’ll find out about our mysterious shadow.” his brother’s voice was warm with reassurance but Sam could still hear the nervous undercurrent to it.

Dean was just as shaken up as he was about the whole someone following them thing.

“Dean,” Sam argued back because he had never been the type to let someone else handle things, he had never been the type to let things go. He heard his brother’s indrawn breath and knew that the older Winchester was preparing himself for a fight. Sam breathed out slowly closing his eyes and muttered into the phone “just be careful okay.”

“Yeah,” he could hear the surprise in his brother’s voice, the relief “I will Sammy, see you in a few hours.” and the phone cut out as his brother hung up on him. Sam stared down at the phone in his hand for a moment before snapping it closed and putting it on the bedside table with a sigh. He had wanted to push it, had wanted to know what had his brother so jumpy since they had entered the city limits but he knew Dean was nowhere near ready to be pushed on any subject.

He knew his brother was still struggling with their dad’s death, still holding everything in and letting it burn inside him. Sam wanted to help him, he felt it too but he couldn’t get through to Dean. The last thing he wanted to do was push his brother just to feed his own curiosity.

Sam flipped closed his phone eyes dragging closed as exhaustion overtook him. But he couldn’t sleep, not yet. Dean was still out there somewhere and Sam had to find him. His brother had been missing for over two months now, he had gone one night to see who had been tailing them and hadn’t returned.

Not that night, not the next, or the one after that.

Sam had become obsessed. He had taken out the spirits haunting a local building that had been the case that had lured them there in the first place and he had spent every waking moment of the past 2 months trying to find out what had happened to his brother. After a few weeks of coming up empty Sam had rented out a small apartment in the city knowing it would cost less than the hotel room.

For the past couple of months he had scoured news reports, interviewed people, talked to as many of their contacts that were answering them and had come up with nothing. Dean had just vanished, his car left in a gas station with no sign of foul play.

The cops hadn’t dug too much into the fake I.Ds Sam had given them; they had returned to the car to him and had listed his brother, Dean Palmer, as a missing person. A missing person they weren’t doing anything to find.

The day after Dean had disappeared Sam had called Bobby and the older Hunter had been unable to come up with anything. No one else in the area was disappearing, the Winchesters hadn’t acquired any new demon enemies since killing the Yellow Eyed Demon, and Sam refused to believe that his brother would leave him.

The only lead he had was an I.D he had found buried in his brother’s bag and a number scrawled onto a piece of paper wrapped around it. He had tried the number every single day for the last month and all he got off the I.D that it had been a name Dean had been going by while working a case and that no one in Metropolis seemed to know who Jason Teague was.

Bobby was looking into it for him and but from what he was finding any record of Jason Teague was buried pretty deep, and if that wasn’t suspicious as hell Sam didn’t know what was.

Sam picked up the phone again rubbing at his eyes and scrolled down to where he the number stored pressing send as he set it against his ear. He heard the familiar ringing on the other end and dragged his hand over his eyes again feeling the burn from lack of sleep. It was 2 in the evening but the constant all nighters and 30 minute naps were finally starting to catch up with him.

Ready to cut the call and get some more reading into how obtain the phone records of Jason Teague there was a click and a female voice echoed on the other end “Hello?”

“Hey,” Sam breathed out stunned the phone gripped tight against his ear.

“Who is this?” the voice was sharp with suspicion and Sam panicked knowing his voice was desperate.

“I’m looking for my brother, Jason Teague.”

Chloe Sullivan held the cell phone she had found stored at the Isis Foundation tight in her hand her eyes going wide as she heard the old familiar name. She swallowed glancing up at Clark whose eyes were wide because clearly he was using his alien powers to listen in on the conversation.

She wet her lips and told the stranger with faux calm “Jason Teague is dead, he died over 2 years ago.” She said it staring Clark straight in the eye and ever since she had learned the truth about him she could recognize when he was hiding something, when he was lying. The look he gave her told her just as much. The man on the other end told her more, his voice filled with a barely controlled anger.

“My brother is alive, he disappeared two months ago and you’re the only one I’ve been able to find that might have some answers.”
