Oh.

First thing when I sit down with my coffee and LJ. My day is colored with it.

Aside from the creep and the tears, your summary staggered me with how simply and effortlessly it evoked place, and it was important to do that early, because the rest of the story needed that sense of place--the echoing emptiness and unchanging repetitiveness--to settle and open up to the reader. Really powerful telling of a small but deeply-felt story.

And now I go look for more tissues.

I was all ready to tell you how I loved the descriptions of the desert and how melancholy good the boys interactions were but then this happened. From "This place is too far gone to save. He thinks, privately, that maybe he is, too." my impending sorrow built up and ah god, Sammy, you made me cry.
