What a wonderful, and painful, casefic!

I loved your descriptions of the time line; with Sam and Dean struggling to understand each other and how you linked the hunt into this; with Phil having to give Barbabra that free-will choice, and Dean learning that he has to do the same with Sam. Beautifully crafted. I like it when we see the Winchesters learn something about themselves from hunts and this was done perfectly.

The ending was sad and painful, but it worked so well within the context of the story and the characters.

Thank you for sharing :)

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I don't write a ton of case fic so this definitely ended up less of a full case fic than it was intended to be but the bones of it are still there I guess! And I'm glad you liked the ending.

Perfect case fic. At first it was just another episode in the Winchesters' nomadic life, and the tension built for the brothers at the same pace as for the readers. I loved the underlying hints of Sam's moods and Dean's fears and how it all came to a head with the college acceptance letter. Dean breaking his heart to repair Sam's breaking heart was beautiful.

Thank you for the lovely comment. Your last sentence is such a lovely way of putting across what I was trying to convey!

The heartbreak of what Dean and Sam need are so diametrically opposed, and you set this in their casefic quite tellingly!

Thanks, that's just what I was trying to do!

Thank you! It's my first pre-Stanford fic so I'm glad you felt the characterisation was convincing. Also, I see from the masterlist that you wrote one of the fics that I really loved this year so it's nice to know that the appreciation is mutual!

Oh, brilliant! I love the parallel, so beautifully executed: the women, loved yet trapped, not free, and SAM - in the same state, really. And Dean so desperate to hang on yet handing over that letter, "getting it," letting go. Amazing. :)

Thank you! Jeanny had a prompt about selkies and I was like 'yes yes it has to be that' but was really dithering about which season to set it in until I realised that of course pre-series was just right!
