I'm so tickled by the notion that as Sam's going through this whole psychomachia, he takes that odd moment to think, huh, I'm pretty damn good at details, aren't I? IDEK I just adore that detail. And Mary's enigmatic presence here indeed; I love the identity established between she and Sam here with that face-pat, and the nature of the conversation they have, even if they didn't really have a chance to know each other in life. <3
The way you had Mary talk to Sam and the things that they discussed was beautiful. Reminded me of his time in the panic room and talking to Mom.
The fact that Sam only talked to Bobby and Dean had so many other characters that Sam could have talked to - your idea of Mary, but John, Pastor Jim, Caleb, Madison, Sarah, Jessica - all of these people could have been great to bring into the mix and have Sam talk to while making the decision.
I love this idea, and it was a treat (though sad) to see Sam able to discuss his life and potential death with Mary. It's awesome that she's the one that tells him Death can make it permanent... I especially appreciate the acknowledgment that when Sam didn't look for Dean (post Dick Roman) he was trying to stop the endless cycle Mary unwittingly started.
