There's an academic named Ralph Williams who's versed in Greek and Aramaic and Latin and other useful hunter languages, so this entire story I was imagining your Ralph Williams and the real Ralph Williams as one and the same. XD Though I doubt(?) the name twinning was intentional, I think it's perfect!
And not to lead from random observation to random observation, the conversation about college between Sam and Kevin made me so sad! Because Kevin had the same taken from him, too, and much more recently; that it doesn't even seem to enter his sphere of desires anymore as he's discussing it with Sam is so tragic. And I love your Kevin's perplexity at the jagged familial rift something like 'college' sears between Sam and Dean--it's clear that there are several large elephants in the room that Kevin is missing, or lacks the personal context to understand, and I really liked that. It's something that goes often overlooked in fic--that all of these characters aren't operating from the same backgrounds or sympathies, and I think you exemplified that really well in this fic. I think that sentiments feeds well into the overarching sense of this fic as some sort of journey, however hesitant or truncated or presently circuitous, everyone here is taking--most prominently, Sam, of course, but also Castiel, in his various explorations, and with regard to Sam and Dean's conversation at the end of this fic, Dean, too.
Also, YES: Sam didn’t know what it was. It could be any of the flesh-eating boogeymen, but that still leaves dozens that could have migrated to the United State, because America wasn’t just a melting pot for civilians.
