That is wonderful to hear, that SPNRR is worth missing sleep to read! \o/
In the planning for this chapter, I had a lot of notes on how we wanted Team Free Will bonding time and how the focus here would be on Sam, Dean, and Cas as a unit of three, and I wanted to have Sam and Dean moments, Sam and Cas, as well as Dean/Cas...also hee, Dean and Cas getting caught stealing a kiss at an inappropriate moment, given that they are not openly demonstrative except when they're all alone, is never not hilarious to me. :D
Writing that Hell flashback stuff, oh my heart. Dean's post-Hell trauma tends to display as a long slow burn. He drinks and doesn't talk about it and it comes out in fits and starts and nightmares but mostly he just keeps going--and some survivors of trauma function that way. Some have more overt breakdowns. Some it comes out in smaller ways. Dean is not likely to have an incident like this again, because that's not how his PTSD works (in our thinking) but a confluence of circumstances-- peril to someone he loves, the charred bodies of the case calling up a traumatic childhood memory colliding with the Hell memory not just of fire=Hell but that Dean used fire to burn souls, which in turn colliding with the traumatic childhood memory--was too much and gave him a full-on flashback.
Yes! Castiel's so scared it reads as anger--a fierce determination that this is NOT ACCEPTABLE, and a fierce protectiveness and his control about to snap. Castiel *panicked*.
\o/ Delighted you enjoyed what was going on with Dean/Cas here. The relationship is progressing and they've been physically intimate since the Christmas DVD extras but here took another step of deepening the emotional intimacy and trust, as well as the physical aspect ramping up another notch.
The fire vampires are a deliberate choice. There is something bigger going on. Wait and see! :D
