Summary: Dean always celebrates Sam's birthday... or he used to. [642 words]
Sam is turning 19 in five minutes. For 18 years, Dean has made sure his little brother had a birthday party. The parties were never that big, the only guests were Dean and Sam. Sometimes John would celebrate with them, but he was usually hunting or drinking.
Eight months ago was when Sam left for college. He hasn’t called Dean, and when Dean calls him he says he has homework or a test to study for. Dean doesn’t want Sam to do bad in school because of him, so he just says “love you Sammy, bye” and hears Sam’s muffled grumble that Dean pretends says ‘I love you too’, or ‘I miss you’. Sam never stays on the line for more then it takes to tell Dean he cant talk, sometimes he doesn‘t even say anything, he just hangs up as soon as he hears Dean‘s voice. And Dean never hangs up before Sam.
One minute until Sam‘s birthday. Dean picks up the hotel phone and dials a number he memorized in ten seconds.
“Hello?” Sammy sounds happy and Dean hears other people near Sam.
“Sammy, happy birthday.” Dean hopes Sam isn’t too busy to talk to his brother.
“Dean, yeah, thanks. I have to go.” Sam waits for a response from his brother before hanging up. This time.
“Yeah, I get it. Bye.” Dean says with his voice drowning in disappointment. And Dean hangs up first.
Dean sits on his twin bed, his arms wrapped around the pillow his little brother used and forgot eight months ago. Dean tries not to cry, not because anyone can see him, he just knows that when he starts, not if, he wont be able to stop.
Dean lights the candy cane striped candle on top of the sprinkle covered frosting and holds the cupcake like it is the most fragile thing in the universe. He doesn’t blow it out, that’s Sam’s job. It’s been Sam’s job for 18 years.
Dean watches the candle burn itself out, the icing uneatable, covered in wax. And Dean presses his face into Sammy’s pillow and cries until John comes back and holds him.

Sam will be 23 in five minutes. He remembers all the times he was to ‘busy’ to talk to his brother. He remembers how defeated Deans voice was on Sam’s 19 th birthday and how Dean never called again. Sam remembers the birthdays he grew up with. He and Dean and a single cupcake with frosting and a candle on top. Sam always made Dean have some with him.
On his 19 th birthday, and the two after, Sam got a big cake. With the same number of candles as his age. He received dozens of presents from his new friends, even one that Dean mailed to him four weeks early to make sure he got it by his birthday.
Sam knows there wont be any celebration this time. Not from his college friends who whispered about him at Jess’ funeral. He wasn’t normal enough to be with them. Dean wont do anything, he might grunt out a ‘happy birthday bitch’, but there won’t be anything behind it. Sam lost Dean when he hurt him the worst way he could. He rejected Dean. He rejected him for eight months.
Sam was all Dean ever had. His little brother, his mission. And Sam left.
Sam is startled out of his thoughts when he hears the door slam. He looks at the clock and sees that its midnight.
Sam looks at the table and sees a single cupcake with a single candle and he smiles. He makes a wish and blows out the candle.
Three hours later when Dean comes back, eye’s red and moist, breath smelling like beer, Sam hands him half his cupcake and sees Dean smile like he did before Sam betrayed him.
