After reading the umpteenth story set in New Mexico with incorrect facts, I decided to outline some information on the state for Supernatural fans.

New Mexico basics:
Population- 2 million
Capitol city - Santa Fe
State bird - the roadrunner
State flower - the yucca cactus
Statehood - 1912, the 37th state, preceding Arizona, Alaska, and Hawaii
Much of New Mexico is known for its art, especially Southwestern, Hispanic, and Native American art.

Major cities:
Albuquerque: the largest city, located in the north central area of the state.
Las Cruces: the second largest city, located in the southern part of the state.
Santa Fe: Capitol and third largest city, located an hour north of Albuquerque
Los Alamos: Home to Los Alamos National Labs, located an hour from Santa Fe.
Roswell: ‘Nuff said.

Universities:
University of New Mexico, main branch located in Albuquerque. School mascot is the Lobo (Mexican wolf)
New Mexico State University, main branch located in Las Cruces. School mascot is the Aggies.
New Mexico Tech, located in Socorro.
Several other smaller universities

Sights:
White Sands National Park
Carlsbad Caverns
The Sandia Tram (Albuquerque)

Monsters and beasts of New Mexico:
La Llorona (the woman in white)
Skinwalkers. The legends I was told about skinwalkers included some other feathers: don't talk about them at night, especially during the summer. If you look one in the eyes it's an omen of death or it will cause your death. Skinwalkers wear the skin of the animal the want to become.
Jackalopes

Commonly mistaken facts:

Saguaros are not native to New Mexico. They are only found in Arizona and the south part of California.

tumbleweed, however, can be found in New Mexico and are considered weeds. Take note, those of you who have been watching cartoons.

It does snow in New Mexico. Much of the state is located in the Rocky Mountains, and therefore is high in elevation (often above 5,000 feet). The climate of the state tends to be quite temperate; however it is also dry. Therefore snow depends on storm systems more than temperature.

Most of us speak English very well, thank you for asking.

High School Musical fans: East High and the University of Albuquerque are both fictional creations, at least as far as I know.

Additions or suggestions? Comment!

All of that brings me to a question: I'm thinking about starting a state-specific community as a resource for SPN fans for posting and organization of this kind of information about US cities and states and I'm trying to gauge interest, so drop a line if this sounds like your kind of thing.
