Summary: How Mary and John got away and started life on their own.
It had all started at the supper table. Her father brought up John Winchester and had some derogatory comments about him. Mary told him that she still planned on going to the dance after graduation with him.
While her father turned beet red and looked as if he was going to explode, her mother wrung the dishtowel until she nearly tore it in two. "Maybe your father has a point," her voice was weak as she appeared to support her husband, but it was easy to tell that she didn't agree with him.
"You need to stay here and hunt, not get your head in the clouds over some guy--" her father started his usual spiel again.
"Don't tell me what to do." Mary spoke calmly and excused herself from the table. She went to her room and closed her door even though she was tempted to slam it and scream.

After school, John was waiting for her in the Impala that he'd just purchased. Mary took a deep breath and hoped that he loved her as much as he said he did. If he didn't, the conversation she was about to have with him would be the end of them.
When John pulled over near the city park, he asked her if her father's opinion of him had changed. She shook her head.
"Before our relationship goes any further, I need to tell you about me and you need to just trust me." Mary reached for John's hand and saw the confusion in his eyes. She had so many secrets. It was now or never.
John listened and didn't pull away from her. When she was done telling him about hunting, she asked, "Is there anything you want to ask me?"
"You'd quit hunting if we left town?"
"Yes. I'd still want to keep just a few things on hand for protection, but that's all," she replied.
"Things like what?"
"Shotgun, rock salt, holy water, rosary, book of Latin, handgun, silver bullets, and a few knives."
"I can live with that."
"You can?" Mary felt as if a large weight had been taken off her chest.
"As long as I still get you, the rest doesn‘t matter," John put an arm around her.

Mary brought some of her belongings each day to school. John put them in the duffle in the trunk of the impala. Mary couldn't take anything that her parents would notice was missing, but most of those items could be replaced. It was pictures, mementos, and the locket her grandmother gave her that she couldn't leave behind.
While Mary was busy in school, John bought some of the items on Mary's list that she'd need for protection. He didn't have to worry about the book of Latin because she had her own copy that she smuggled to the school.
Graduation Day came and Mary was nervous. She was in her best dress and heels. Her cap and gown were white. She had a pink corsage. A friend took a picture of Mary and her parents before the ceremony. After the ceremony, when the crowd was milling around, Mary raced to where John said he'd be. When she saw that Impala, she wore the first real smile she'd had all day.
A Justice of the Peace married them in the next state. They didn't stop there, though. They kept driving. Mary needed to put as many miles as possible between her and her parents.
When they stopped at a hotel for the night, John asked Mary if she regretted leaving the only home she'd ever known. She swore that she didn't. As the years went by, she never did.
