When the wine god Dionysus went to Hades to rescue his mother, Prosymnus rowed him from shore to shore. The payment that Prosymnus demanded was the right to make love to Dionysus. Dionysus returned to the land of the living via a different route and by the time he returned to the shore to pay his debt, Prosymnus had died.
In order to keep his promise, Dionysus fashioned a piece of a fig tree into a phallus and used to it ritually fulfill his promise to Prosymnus while seated on his tomb.
