1.
Apocalypse Please - Muse
declare this an emergency
come on and spread a sense of urgency
and pull us through
and pull us through
and this is the end
this is the end of the world
it's time we saw a miracle
come on it's time for something biblical
to pull us through
and pull us through
and this is the end
this is the end of the world
proclaim eternal victory
come on and change the course of history
and pull us through
and pull us through
and this is the end
this is the end of the world

Great Expectations - Cat Power
I am like powder
I am like relaxation
I am the snow
I live in a desert
And I let the wind make love to me
I dig in this ocean and i try to fill it with gold
Fill it to the top
Do you look for hope in other people's eyes
Well that may be your worst redemption
Do you feed and clothe yourself
Well that may be your best defense
I am from the moon
So they say
Facing, confronting, branding each other
We were made through one another
The destruction rolled across the oceans and devastated continents. Anna has seen civilizations rise and fall; she’s watched empires crumble in the blink of an eye. This is different. This is bigger, and she doesn’t want to face it alone.
3.
A Stroke Of Luck - Garbage
You say that you'll be there to catch me
Or will you only try to trap me
These are the rules I make
Our chains were meant to break
You'll never change me
Here comes the cold again
I feel it closing in
You're falling down and
All around me falling
Stroke of luck or a gift from God?
Hand of fate or devil's claws?
From below or saints above?
You come to me now
Ruby stands in a field of ashes. The taste of charcoal is thick in the air; she can feel it in every pore of this body. It’s been the same everywhere she’s wandered, aimless amidst the chaos.
Anna moves towards her silently, feet not disturbing the still settling ash. The angelic presence makes Ruby bristle instinctively but Anna’s face is open, her eyes wide, and Ruby takes a step towards her.
4.
The War - Angels and Airwaves
The ocean, is on fire
The sky turned dark again
As the boats came in
And the beaches
Stretched out with soldiers
With their arms and guns
It has just begun
Believe, you want this
Believe, I want this too
Why wont you tell me that
It's almost over
Why must this?
Tear my head
Inside out
And the houses
Laid out like targets
With the deafening sound
We watched them all go down
And the families
Now useless bodies
They lay still black and blue
A gift from us to you
It doesn’t take much to get them noticed. One dead angel, five dead demons, one a city left standing and they’re on the radar of both Heaven and Hell.
“You know they’ll just keep coming after us,” Ruby says. They’re standing on the edge of the city, supervising the survivors while they use all of their combined knowledge to angel and demon proof the perimeter.
“Yeah,” Anna says, testing the boundary. “We’ll keep fighting until they stop.”
“Or we die,” Ruby offers. She tries to step over a protective sigil and can’t, which makes her smile. “Seems more likely.”
“Maybe,” she nods towards the humans. “But they’ll still be here.”
5.
Paradise Circus - Massive Attack
Oh well the devil makes us sin
But we like it when we're spinning, in his grip
Love is like a sin my love
For the ones that feels it the most
Look at her with her eyes like a flame
She will love you like a fly will never love you, again
When they kiss Ruby’s eyes turn black and Anna tastes the darkness in her. She could burn it all away, the light itches in her fingertips. Ruby moans into her mouth and Anna clenches her fists in Ruby’s hair.
6.
The World is Falling - Mirah
Tell me once again if everything is as it seems
If things are getting better, what's that crashing down the street?
The wind you say, the storm that came, remember our retreat?
And darker days might come and stay and signal our defeat
If drug up from the mock I reel in what I hope will be
A trove of golden apples from the golden apple tree
Flush with fertile seeds I give them all away for free
For this our people should be known throughout all history
But from here we crouch and watch the plunder
Of the world we built with sweat and love
Why were you not built for wonder?
Why will you never get enough?
You say when you landed you could tell
That your conquest would go well
Though you wet yourself with fear
You were sure your god was near
Ruby hotwires a car, just because she can and she misses driving. Anna sits in the passenger seat, leaning against the window. She removes any debris blocking their way with a weary wave of her hand; bones crunch under the tires.
7.
If Only Tonight We Could Sleep - The Cure
If only tonight we could sleep
In a bed made of flowers
If only tonight we could fall
In a deathless spell
If only tonight we could slide
Into deep black water
And breathe
And breathe...
Then an angel would come
With burning eyes like stars
And bury us deep
In his velvet arms
And the rain would cry
As our faces slipped away
And the rain would cry
Don't let it end...
They last longer than Ruby’s pessimism let her expect. Angels and demons alike attack them, these two lone rebels. Each time Ruby and Anna walk away, leaving empty vessels in their wake. Ruby feels weary, exhaustion right down to her borrowed bones.
In an empty diner, in an empty town, Anna reclines in a booth while Ruby rummages through the contents of the kitchen. She doesn’t find much; rancid meat, decaying vegetables. Sure, they don’t need it, but Ruby’s always enjoyed food and damn, does she miss it.
Ruby slides into the booth across from her, staring out the window as rain hits the dirty glass. Under the table Anna’s foot nudges her own.

Woman King - Iron and Wine
blackbird claw, raven wing
under the red sunlight
long clothesline, two shirt sleeves
waving as we go by
hundred years, hundred more
someday we may see a
woman king, wristwatch time
slowing as she goes to sleep
black horse fly, lemonade
jar on the red ant hill
garden worm, cigarette
ash on the window sill
hundred years, hundred more
someday we may see a
woman king, sword in hand
swing at some evil and bleed
black hoof mare, broken leg
eye on the shot gun shell
age old dog, hornet nest
built in the big church bell
hundred years, hundred more
someday we may see a
woman king, bloodshot eye
thumb down and starting to weep
Anna scares her sometimes. Ruby will never admit if of course, but sometimes she feels Anna looking inside her and she’s reminded just what she is. She thinks of the scared human girl she first met, so long ago and has trouble reconciling her with this being she’s seen smite down angels and burn demons into dust.
But then she will laugh at Ruby’s gallows humour, or get excited when they find a living tree with fresh fruit growing on it and her smile makes Ruby ache.

Heaven Tonight - Hole
Here comes the sun in the form of a girl
She's the finest sweetest thing in the world
Take you to heaven tonight
I feel the horses coming galloping
In the summer rain
Take you to heaven tonight
'Cause I love you for what you are
I'll gallop to you, tonight, tonight
We'll ride, I'll give it to you
We're going to heaven tonight
Tonight
Here comes a storm in the form of a girl
She's the finest sweetest thing in the world
I'll go to heaven tonight for what you are
I'll gallop to you tonight, tonight
We'll ride, I'll bow down to you
We'll go to heaven tonight
Spread out on the damp earth, under the ink-black sky, Ruby arches and writhes under Anna’s hands and tongue. She feels Anna’s smile against her thigh, Anna’s fingers sliding deep inside her, the ground wet against her naked back. The world is reduced to this, the sensations making her body feel like it’s on fire. She feels anchored, like for once in her long, long life she’s where she belongs.

We're In This Together - Nine Inch Nails
the farther I fall I'm beside you
as lost as I get I will find you
the deeper the wound I'm inside you
for ever and ever I'm a part of
you and me
we're in this together now
none of them can stop us now
we will make it through somehow
you and me
if the world should break in two
until the very end of me
until the very end of you
all that we were is gone we have to hold on
when all our hope is gone we have to hold on
all that we were is gone but we can hold on
you and me
we're in this together now
none of them can stop us now
we will make it through somehow
you and me
even after everything
you're the queen and I'm the king
nothing else means anything
