Welcome to
spn_feminist.
I created this community because feminism seems to have become a dirty word in Supernatural fandom. Any attempt by feminist fans to discuss what we see as problems in the show: increasing use of misogynistic language and graphic violence against women, to name but two, is shouted down in most fan communities. We are told we're over-sensitive, or that we're reading too much into it. We are told we do not see the things we see clearly in the show.
spn_feminist is for fans of Supernatural who want to discuss these issues in a forum where the feminist viewpoint is welcome.
First and foremost, we are FANS of Supernatural. We're not here to bash the show, the writers or the actors. But being fans, we acknowledge that the show isn't perfect. We can love the show as much as any other fan, we can tune in every week to follow the adventures of Sam and Dean, and we can still recognise that some aspects of the show are problematic and even on occasion offensive.
Community membership is moderated only because feminist communities on LJ are frequently trolled. Anonymous commenting is disabled for the same reason. You don't have to identify as a feminist to join, only as a Supernatural fan.
Community rules for a feminist community are always tough to create. Below is my first attempt at a set of basic rules for this comm: your input is very welcome and I expect the guidelines to evolve as the community develops.
1. First and foremost, we are fans of Supernatural. We want to discuss the faults in the show (including, but not limited to, the treatment of women), but we want to talk about the good stuff, too.
2. SPOILER POLICY: Until such time as I get a co-mod who isn't a spoilerphobe, this is a spoiler-free zone. No spoilers for unaired episodes in posts or in commments. As soon as the episode has aired in the US, you can talk about it.
3. Discussions of fandom-related issues (including wincest and RPS) from a women-positive perspective are also welcome...but please do not make direct references to specific fans. I do not want to see this comm featured in fandom_wank, okay?
4. Misogynistic language or attitudes will not be tolerated.
5. While we're at it, no racist language either. No discriminatory language of any kind. That said, this should not be considered "safe space" in the way feminists generally understand the term: disagreements, heated discussion and strong opinions will not be censored as long as discussion stays within the general rules of netiquette.
6. If someone breaks the rules, please contact the mod. The mod will issue a warning if appropriate. Repeated rulebreakers will be removed from the community.
7. Don't feed trolls. I know it's fun, but it only encourages them.
Seeking a co-mod: I'm
morgan32 and right now I'm the only mod around here. I'm a UK fan of SPN and a major spoilerphobe. Because I can't be online 24/7 and because I really do want to avoid even little spoilers I would like at least one co-mod for this community. See the post below this one if you'd like to volunteer.
